Akowonjo

Akowonjo is a densely built residential and commercial neighbourhood on the mainland of Lagos, in south-western Nigeria. It sits within Alimosho, the most populous local government area of Lagos State, roughly fifteen kilometres north-west of the older island districts, and it shares boundaries with Egbeda, Dopemu, Shasha and Ikeja. The terrain is low and gently undulating, and the streets are lined with two and three storey buildings whose ground floors are almost invariably shops.

Several hundred thousand people live in Akowonjo and the immediately surrounding communities. Its importance lies in housing and trade. It provides homes for a very large share of the workforce that commutes daily into Ikeja, Apapa and Lagos Island, and its markets and roadside commerce serve one of the fastest growing parts of the metropolis.

The area was originally farmland belonging to Awori Yoruba communities, part of the wider Ikeja district, and it remained semi-rural into the second half of the twentieth century. As Lagos expanded after Nigerian independence and especially after the oil boom of the 1970s, developers laid out housing estates on the western mainland, and Akowonjo filled rapidly with families moving out of the congested older neighbourhoods. Its growth accelerated again from the 1990s onwards, and today the built-up area runs continuously from here to the state boundary with Ogun.

Akowonjo is not a place of monuments but of everyday urban energy. The Akowonjo roundabout is the recognised centre, a busy junction ringed by shops, banks, restaurants and event halls, and the nearby Shasha and Egbeda markets are among the largest in western Lagos, selling produce, textiles, building materials and electronics. The neighbourhood has a strong evening street food culture, with suya grills, amala and pepper soup joints doing their best business after dark, and its lounges, hair salons and small hotels give the area a lively social scene.

Life here is thoroughly Yoruba in character, with Nigerian Pidgin and English used alongside the Yoruba language, though people from every part of the country have settled in the area. Churches and mosques stand within metres of one another, and weekend owambe parties, with matching fabrics, live music and vast quantities of food, spill out onto the streets. Football viewing centres fill for European matches, and Nigerian music from Afrobeats to fuji provides a constant soundtrack.

Transport is the great daily challenge, as it is throughout Lagos. Akowonjo Road and the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway at Dopemu carry heavy traffic towards Ikeja and the airport, and residents rely on yellow minibuses, motorcycle and tricycle taxis and increasingly on ride-hailing services, while the new urban rail lines built across Lagos have begun to ease movement in the wider area.

Schools, colleges and private institutions serve the neighbourhood, with universities in Ikeja, Ojo and Akoka within commuting distance.

Akowonjo offers an unfiltered view of how most of Lagos actually lives, crowded, enterprising, sociable and constantly in motion.
