At the North and South Poles, every line of longitude on Earth converges on a single point. All 24 time zones meet there, which means the usual method of deciding what time it is — look at your longitude, count meridians from Greenwich — produces every possible answer at once. The poles are the one place where geography is silent and somebody simply has to choose. The choices that have been made are stranger than the question.
- Neither pole has an official time zone. All meridians converge, so longitude gives no answer.
- The South Pole runs on New Zealand time — UTC+12 or UTC+13 — because its supply flights come from Christchurch.
- Antarctic research stations use the time of whoever supplies them, so bases a few hundred kilometres apart can be ten hours apart on the clock.

Why Longitude Stops Working
The whole time-zone system rests on one assumption: that a place has a longitude, and that longitude tells you how far ahead of or behind Greenwich the sun is. The Earth turns 15 degrees an hour, so 90 degrees west of Greenwich is six hours behind. That logic works everywhere except at the two points where all the meridians meet.
Standing exactly at the South Pole, you are simultaneously on the meridian of London, the meridian of Tokyo and the meridian of Denver. Take one step in any direction and you are heading north. There is no local noon, because the sun never climbs to a high point and descends again on a daily cycle — in the polar summer it simply circles the horizon at a roughly constant height, going all the way round once every 24 hours without setting. The International Date Line has the same problem. It runs down the Pacific and terminates at both poles, so at the pole itself the boundary between today and tomorrow is a point rather than a line. Walk a small circle around the marker and you cross it once per lap.
The South Pole Runs on New Zealand Time
The Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station, staffed year-round by the United States Antarctic Program, keeps New Zealand time: UTC+12 in the southern winter and UTC+13 during New Zealand’s daylight saving. It is an American base at the bottom of the world running on the clock of a country 4,000 km away, and the reason is entirely logistical.
Everything that reaches the South Pole arrives via Christchurch, New Zealand, which is the gateway airport for the US and New Zealand Antarctic programmes. Cargo, personnel and the LC-130 flights all stage through McMurdo Station on the Ross Sea, which itself runs on New Zealand time. Sharing a clock with the supply chain means flight schedules, cargo manifests and the daily radio schedule need no conversion. It also means the station changes its clocks in step with Auckland, so the South Pole observes New Zealand daylight saving despite there being no daylight to save.
The pole itself carries two markers a few metres apart. The ceremonial pole is the striped barber pole ringed by the flags of the original Antarctic Treaty signatories, and the geographic pole is a small surveyed marker that is repositioned every New Year’s Day — the ice sheet beneath the station drifts roughly ten metres a year, carrying the buildings with it.
Every Base Picks Its Own
Because the Antarctic Treaty suspends territorial claims, no country can impose a time zone on the continent. Each station therefore adopts whatever suits its resupply route or its home government, and the result is one of the most fragmented time maps on Earth:

The consequences are genuinely odd. Rothera and Casey are both in Antarctica and are eleven hours apart. Troll, a Norwegian station at 72° South, observes Central European Summer Time — it springs forward in March along with Oslo, which is one of the few daylight saving changes on the planet with no astronomical justification whatsoever. And Concordia, run jointly by France and Italy, keeps UTC+8: neither French nor Italian, but the time of Perth, because that is where the aircraft come from. Gateway cities give a rough guide to which side of the continent a station belongs to: Ushuaia and Punta Arenas serve the Antarctic Peninsula, Cape Town serves the Atlantic sector, Hobart and Perth the Australian sector, and Christchurch the Ross Sea. The North Pole Has No Time at All
The South Pole at least has a building on it. The North Pole is the middle of the Arctic Ocean, covered by drifting sea ice, with no permanent population and no station to define a convention. It therefore has no time zone whatsoever, and never has had one.
In practice everyone who goes there brings a clock with them:
- Ships — icebreakers running tourist voyages to 90° North normally keep the time of their port of departure, usually Murmansk in Russia or Longyearbyen on Svalbard, for the whole trip.
- Aircraft and expeditions generally work in UTC, which is also what aviation uses worldwide, so nobody has to negotiate a shared reference.
- Drifting research stations, historically Soviet and Russian, kept Moscow time regardless of where the ice had carried them.
The nearest permanently inhabited places sit far to the south and use ordinary national time. Alert in Nunavut, at about 82° North, is the world’s northernmost permanently staffed settlement and runs on Canadian Eastern Time. Longyearbyen, on Svalbard at 78° North, uses Norwegian time like Tromsø. Nuuk in Greenland keeps its own offset on the other side of the Arctic. None of them are close enough to the pole for it to matter.
Six Months of Day, Six Months of Night
The deepest oddity is not which zone a station picks but the fact that the choice makes no observational difference. At the poles the sun rises once and sets once per year:

Atmospheric refraction stretches both events by a couple of weeks, and there are long periods of twilight either side, but the principle holds: a single sunrise and a single sunset a year, with the sun circling the sky at a steady height in between. That leaves the clock doing nothing except co-ordinating human activity — when to eat, when to sleep, when to call home. Stations enforce a rigid schedule precisely because there is no daylight to supply one, and winter-over crews report that keeping to it is the main defence against the body clock drifting loose during the months of darkness.
It also produces one of the few genuinely charming consequences. The South Pole station holds an annual Race Around the World, a run of a few kilometres looping around the geographic pole. Every lap crosses every meridian, every time zone and the date line itself. Both poles are, in the end, the clearest demonstration of something true everywhere else as well: time zones are a human convention laid over astronomy, not a fact derived from it. Nepal chose UTC+5:45 for political reasons and France resisted Greenwich for twenty-seven years — the history of the whole system is a chain of decisions of the same kind, and half-hour offsets exist for the same reason. At the poles the astronomy simply withdraws entirely and leaves the convention standing on its own.
