Alanya

Alanya is a resort city and district on the Turkish Riviera (Turquoise Coast), located in the eastern part of Antalya Province in southern Turkey, approximately 135 kilometers east of Antalya city. Situated on a dramatic rocky promontory jutting into the Mediterranean Sea, Alanya combines a spectacular natural setting, a historic Seljuk castle perched on the clifftop, and some of the most popular beaches in Turkey to create one of the country's most visited tourist destinations.

With a population of approximately 320,000 in the district, Alanya has grown enormously from a small market town to a major international resort over the past five decades, driven entirely by the development of beach tourism. The city attracts millions of visitors each year, the majority from Germany, Russia, and Scandinavia, and has developed a substantial international resident community, particularly from Northern Europe. The warm Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters, makes Alanya popular year-round, though the peak season runs from May to October.

Alanya's defining landmark is its medieval castle (Alanya Kalesi), built in the 13th century by the Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I after he captured the city. The castle complex crowns the entire rocky promontory and is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Turkey. Within the walls there is a small village, a Byzantine church, and excellent views over both the eastern and western bays. The Red Tower (Kızıl Kule), a striking octagonal red-brick tower built in 1226 on the harbor, is the most photographed symbol of the city and houses an ethnographic museum. The Seljuk-era shipyard (Tersane), one of the finest examples of medieval Islamic naval architecture in the world, is built into the rocks at the base of the cliff.

Cleopatra Beach (Kleopatra Plajı), on the western side of the promontory, is the most famous beach in Alanya — a wide crescent of golden sand backed by the mountains, with calm Mediterranean water. According to legend, Mark Antony gifted this beach to Cleopatra, though historians are skeptical. Alanya's other beaches, including Dim Çay, Incekum, and Keykubat Beach, stretch along the coast in both directions. Sea cave excursions are a popular activity — the Damlataş Cave (with stalactites and a humid atmosphere said to benefit asthma sufferers), the Phosphorescent Cave, and the Pirates Cave are all accessible by boat from the harbor.

The weekly market in Alanya is one of the largest in the Antalya region, selling fresh produce, spices, textiles, and leather goods. Turkish cuisine — mezze, grilled fish, lamb dishes, and the local specialties of the Antalya region — is served in restaurants throughout the city alongside international menus catering to the tourist market. The Dim River valley inland from the city offers hiking, trout restaurants, and the opportunity to explore the relatively untouched landscapes of the western Taurus Mountains.

Alanya is served primarily by Gazipaşa–Alanya Airport, about 45 kilometers east, with direct flights from many European cities in summer. Antalya Airport (about 135 kilometers west) provides additional international connections. Buses connect Alanya to Antalya and to other coastal towns.

Alanya is a city where centuries of history and natural Mediterranean drama coexist with a modern tourist infrastructure, offering visitors a Turkish coastal experience of considerable visual appeal and genuine historic depth.
