Álvaro Obregón

Álvaro Obregón is one of the sixteen boroughs (alcaldías) of Mexico City, located in the western part of the Mexican capital. With a population of over 750,000, it is one of the most populous boroughs of Mexico City and forms an integral part of the vast metropolitan area of the capital. The borough is named after Álvaro Obregón, the Mexican revolutionary general and president assassinated in 1928.

The area that today constitutes Álvaro Obregón has a rich pre-Hispanic history. It was part of the Valley of Mexico inhabited by various indigenous groups, and during the colonial period it became home to scattered villages and haciendas. The 20th century brought significant urbanization, as Mexico City expanded rapidly westward, absorbing what had been towns and rural communities into the growing metropolis. Santa Fe, which straddles the border with the neighboring borough of Cuajimalpa, developed into one of Latin America's most significant business districts in recent decades.

Among the most historically and culturally significant sites within Álvaro Obregón are the San Ángel neighborhood — a beautiful colonial-era village now integrated into Mexico City — and the artistic enclave of Chimalistac. San Ángel is renowned for its cobblestone streets, colorful 17th and 18th-century buildings, art galleries, and the famous Bazar del Sábado (Saturday Market), a prestigious weekly handicrafts fair. The Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo, located in San Ángel, preserves the interlinked studios where the iconic muralist Diego Rivera and painter Frida Kahlo once worked and lived.

The borough is also home to the Pedregal de San Ángel, a unique ecological reserve situated within the campus of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). The UNAM campus itself, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its spectacular murals and modernist architecture, is a cultural treasure of international significance. The lush Jardín Botánico within UNAM further enhances the ecological and educational richness of the area.

The Santa Fe business district represents the modern, commercial face of Álvaro Obregón, featuring skyscrapers, upscale shopping centers, and corporate headquarters of major Mexican and international companies. This area has transformed the western corridor of Mexico City into a high-value business hub, though also one criticized for its traffic congestion and social contrasts.

Álvaro Obregón's remarkable blend of colonial heritage, artistic legacy, world-class university culture, and contemporary commercial dynamism makes it one of Mexico City's most complex and fascinating boroughs — a place where centuries of Mexican history coexist within a single urban landscape.
