Ancona

Ancona is the capital city of the Marche region in central Italy, situated on a promontory on the Adriatic coast approximately midway along the Italian peninsula. With a population of around 100,000 residents, it is the largest city in the Marche region and one of the most important ports on the Adriatic Sea. Ancona's natural harbor, formed by the elbow-shaped promontory on which the city is built — a feature that gave it its ancient Greek name, from "ankon" meaning "elbow" — has made it a center of maritime commerce and connectivity for more than two millennia.

The city was founded by Greek settlers from Syracuse around 387 BC and grew significantly under Roman rule, becoming an important naval base and commercial port. The Roman emperor Trajan expanded the harbor in the 2nd century AD, and the Arch of Trajan, a beautifully preserved triumphal arch standing at the harbor entrance, remains one of the finest Roman monuments in Italy. It was constructed in 115 AD to honor Trajan for his improvements to the port and continues to stand with remarkable dignity overlooking the modern ferry terminal.

Ancona's historic center, perched on the hillside of Monte Guasco, retains considerable medieval and Renaissance character despite significant damage sustained during World War II and a devastating landslide in 1982. The Cathedral of San Ciriaco, a striking Romanesque structure built over a Greek temple and a Roman basilica, crowns the hilltop and offers sweeping views over the Adriatic. The Piazza del Plebiscito, known locally as Piazza del Papa, features a statue of Pope Clement XII and is the civic heart of the historic center.

The Marche National Museum, housed in the 16th-century Palazzo Ferretti, contains an important collection of prehistoric, Greek, and Roman artifacts from across the region, reflecting the area's extraordinarily long history of human habitation. The Church of Santa Maria della Piazza, with its intricate Romanesque facade decorated with figures of saints, is another architectural highlight of the city.

As the main ferry hub for services crossing the Adriatic to Croatia, Greece, and Albania, Ancona plays a crucial role in connecting Italy with the Balkans and the eastern Mediterranean. The port handles a significant volume of freight traffic as well as passenger ferries, and this international gateway function gives the city a cosmopolitan character.

The Marche region surrounding Ancona is celebrated for its food and wine culture. Vincigrassi — a rich baked pasta dish — is the signature preparation of the regional cuisine, while the Verdicchio white wine, produced in the hills inland from the coast, is one of Italy's most distinguished white wines.

Ancona is well connected by rail to Rome, Bologna, and other major Italian cities, and the Marche Airport serves flights to domestic and European destinations. The city's compact public bus network serves the main urban areas.

Ancona is a city that rewards the curious traveler who ventures beyond the standard Italian tourist itinerary, offering ancient history, striking architecture, Adriatic seascapes, and an authentically Italian urban life relatively untouched by mass tourism.
