Annaba
Annaba is a major coastal city in northeastern Algeria, situated on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea near the border with Tunisia. It is the capital of Annaba Province and serves as one of the most important urban and industrial centers in the country. The city enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, and its setting between the sea, surrounding mountains, and fertile plains gives it a scenically attractive environment. The Gulf of Annaba provides a natural harbor that has shaped the city's destiny for millennia.
With a population of approximately 400,000 in the city proper and a broader metropolitan area of over one million, Annaba is Algeria's fourth-largest city. It is a significant economic powerhouse, home to the country's largest steel complex, the El Hadjar steel plant, which has been a cornerstone of Algerian heavy industry since the 1970s. The port of Annaba is one of Algeria's most active, handling significant volumes of trade and export.
The area around Annaba has been inhabited since antiquity. The ancient Phoenician and later Roman city of Hippo Regius stood nearby, and it was here that Saint Augustine of Hippo — one of the most influential theologians in the history of Christianity — served as bishop in the fourth and fifth centuries AD. The ruins of Hippo Regius, located just outside the modern city, remain an important archaeological site, and a basilica was built in Augustine's honor in the nineteenth century overlooking the city from a prominent hilltop.
The Basilica of Saint Augustine is Annaba's most iconic landmark, its twin towers visible from much of the city and from the sea. Nearby, the ruins of Hippo Regius include a forum, baths, villas, and mosaic floors that offer a vivid picture of Roman urban life in North Africa. The old French colonial town, known as the Cours de la Révolution and surrounding streets, preserves elegant nineteenth-century architecture that gives central Annaba a distinctly Mediterranean character.
Annaba has a lively cultural life supported by theatres, art galleries, a regional museum, and the University of Badji Mokhtar, which enrolls tens of thousands of students and is one of Algeria's larger universities. The city's café culture, public promenades, and seafront corniche make it a pleasant place for leisurely exploration.
Public transportation includes city buses and shared taxis serving the urban area, while the railway station connects Annaba to other Algerian cities including Constantine and Algiers. The Rabah Bitat International Airport provides air links to domestic destinations and several European cities.
The economy of Annaba is anchored by steel production, port activities, commerce, and a growing services sector. The city's industrial base makes it one of Algeria's most economically significant secondary cities, though diversification efforts are ongoing to build a more balanced economic profile.
With its ancient Roman roots, striking Augustinian heritage, Mediterranean shoreline, and modern industrial energy, Annaba presents a compelling fusion of history and contemporary Algerian life. It stands as a proud city at the northeastern edge of Africa, where the stories of antiquity and the ambitions of the present continue to intertwine.
