Anyang-si

Anyang is a mid-sized city in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, located immediately south of Seoul in the southern part of the Seoul Metropolitan Area. Flanked by mountain ranges to the east and west and connected directly to the capital by multiple transit lines, Anyang functions primarily as a major residential and light industrial suburb of Seoul. With a population of approximately 550,000 people, it is one of the larger satellite cities of the Korean capital and an integral part of the Greater Seoul conurbation, one of the world's largest metropolitan areas.

Anyang's development as a modern city was rapid and occurred largely in the context of South Korea's extraordinary economic transformation during the second half of the 20th century. During the period of industrialization and urbanization that followed the Korean War, Anyang grew from a small agricultural town into a densely populated industrial and residential city. Textile mills and other light manufacturing facilities were established, providing employment for migrants from rural Korea who flooded into the Seoul metropolitan area during the economic boom decades of the 1960s through 1980s.

Today, Anyang retains a significant manufacturing base but is also increasingly oriented toward services, commerce, and residential living. The city is home to numerous high-tech and light industrial businesses, as well as a large commuter population that travels to Seoul for work. Its relatively affordable housing prices compared to central Seoul have made it popular with young families and professionals.

One of Anyang's most distinctive cultural assets is the Anyang Art Park, located in the Anyang stream valley surrounded by forested mountains. The park is an outdoor contemporary sculpture and installation art space that has been developed over several phases, commissioning works from Korean and international artists. It offers a remarkable and unexpected cultural experience — world-class contemporary artworks set against the backdrop of a natural mountain valley within a densely urbanized metropolitan area.

The Anyang stream (Anyangcheon) flows through the city and has been developed as a linear greenway offering walking and cycling paths. This kind of urban stream restoration is an important quality-of-life improvement that has been replicated in many Korean cities following Seoul's famous Cheonggyecheon stream restoration project. The mountains on either side of the city — particularly the Gwanak Mountain to the east, shared with Seoul — offer excellent hiking within easy reach of urban areas.

The city is well served by Seoul Metro subway lines and KTX railroad connections that provide fast and convenient access to central Seoul and to other parts of the metropolitan area. Anyang Station and Banan Station are major transit hubs. The city has schools, colleges, hospitals, and extensive commercial facilities serving its large residential population.

Anyang-si reflects the dynamism and dense urban vitality of the Seoul metropolitan region — a city that grew rapidly with South Korea's economic miracle and has matured into a well-connected, culturally interesting, and livable component of one of the world's great urban agglomerations.
