Aranjuez

Aranjuez is a historic royal town located about 50 kilometers south of Madrid at the confluence of the Tagus and Jarama rivers in the Community of Madrid. With a population of approximately 60,000 inhabitants, the town is internationally renowned as the site of the Royal Palace of Aranjuez and its spectacular gardens, which were collectively inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2001 as a Cultural Landscape. For centuries, Aranjuez served as the spring residence of the Spanish royal family, and its architectural and landscaped heritage reflects the ambitions and tastes of the Bourbon dynasty.

The Royal Palace of Aranjuez (Palacio Real de Aranjuez) is the centerpiece of the town's heritage. Originally built during the reign of Philip II in the 16th century and substantially expanded by the Bourbon monarchs in the 18th century, the palace is an elegant example of the Spanish version of French Baroque architecture. Its ornate Royal Hall, Throne Room, Porcelain Room, and Smoking Room are decorated with extraordinary craftsmanship and furnishings. Surrounding the palace are the formal gardens: the Jardín del Parterre with its geometric flower beds, the Island Garden laid out on a peninsula formed by the Tagus, and the vast Prince's Garden extending for several kilometers along the river.

Aranjuez is famous throughout Spain for the quality of its locally grown strawberries and white asparagus, products that have been cultivated in the fertile river meadows (vegas) since the 16th century. The town's unique microclimate and the irrigation systems developed for the royal gardens created ideal agricultural conditions. Every spring, restaurants in Aranjuez and Madrid offer special menus featuring strawberries from Aranjuez with cream, and the town celebrates the Strawberry Train (Tren de la Fresa), a historic steam train that runs between Madrid and Aranjuez on weekends, transporting passengers back through time while serving strawberries on board.

The town center of Aranjuez, developed as a model planned town in the 18th century under the direction of Ferdinand VI and Charles III, features a regular grid of wide streets and handsome Baroque architecture. The Church of San Antonio, the Plaza de San Antonio, and the elegant mansions and pavilions scattered through the gardens contribute to an atmosphere of royal grandeur. The Casa del Labrador (Laborer's Cottage), a neoclassical royal pavilion within the Prince's Garden, is richly decorated with antique sculptures and luxurious furnishings, belying its humble name.

Music lovers will recognize Aranjuez as the inspiration for the Concierto de Aranjuez by the Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo, a celebrated guitar concerto that has become one of the most beloved pieces of Spanish classical music and a symbol of the town's romantic atmosphere. The piece captures the melancholy beauty of the gardens and the sound of flowing water in the royal landscapes.

Aranjuez's combination of royal heritage, beautiful gardens, fine cuisine, and natural riverside scenery makes it one of the most rewarding excursions from Madrid. Whether arriving by the historic Strawberry Train or by modern commuter rail, visitors invariably find the town a place of beauty, history, and tranquility worthy of its royal reputation.
