Āsansol is the second-largest city in the state of West Bengal, India, and one of the major industrial centers of eastern India. Located in the Paschim Bardhaman district, the city lies approximately 200 kilometers northwest of Kolkata in the Damodar Valley coalfield region. With a population of approximately 1.2 million people in the urban agglomeration, Āsansol has developed as a significant center of coal mining, steel production, and heavy industry. It is classified as one of India's Tier-2 cities and serves as an important regional hub in the western part of West Bengal.

The history of Āsansol as an industrial city is closely tied to the development of the Raniganj Coalfield, one of India's oldest and most productive coal mining regions. The Biharinath Hill and the Joychandi Hill are important natural and pilgrimage sites near the city that offer scenic trekking opportunities. The Maithon and Panchet dams on the Damodar River, built in the 1950s as part of the Damodar Valley Corporation project, provide important water resources and have become popular picnic and recreation destinations for residents of the area.

The economy of Āsansol has been challenged by the decline of traditional coal and steel industries in recent decades, as mines have become exhausted and global steel market conditions have shifted. Efforts to diversify the economic base through development of small and medium enterprises, trade, and the service sector have had mixed results. The city has educational institutions including Kazi Nazrul University, named after the rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam who was associated with the broader Āsansol region, and several engineering and medical colleges.

Āsansol Junction is one of the most important railway stations in eastern India, handling enormous volumes of passenger and freight traffic. Road connectivity to Kolkata, Durgapur, Dhanbad, and other regional centers is good. Despite economic challenges, Āsansol remains an important city in the industrial and cultural landscape of eastern India, with a rich history rooted in the coal and steel industries that shaped modern India.
