Ashgabat
Ashgabat is the capital and largest city of Turkmenistan, a Central Asian nation bordered by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Iran. With a population of approximately 1.1 million, Ashgabat serves as the political, administrative, cultural, and economic center of the country. The city is located in the Karakum Desert near the foothills of the Kopet Dag mountain range, close to the border with Iran.
Originally a small settlement known as Askhabad, the city was established as a Russian fortress in 1881 following Russian imperial expansion into Central Asia. It developed as an administrative center under the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union, growing steadily through the 20th century. Following a devastating earthquake in 1948 that killed much of the city's population and destroyed most of its buildings, Ashgabat was rebuilt on a grid plan. After Turkmenistan gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, the capital underwent a dramatic and extraordinary transformation.
Ashgabat is internationally recognized — and listed in the Guinness World Records — for having the world's highest concentration of white marble-clad buildings. Under the rule of the country's first president, Saparmurat Niyazov (Turkmenbashi), and his successor Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, the city was rebuilt on a massive scale with gleaming white marble government buildings, golden domes, monumental statues, and perfectly manicured boulevards. The result is an otherworldly cityscape unlike any other capital in the world.
Key landmarks include the Independence Monument, the Earthquake Monument, the Monument of Neutrality featuring a rotating golden statue, and the immense Oguz Khan Presidential Palace complex. Broad boulevards lined with fountains, parks, and perfectly symmetrical white buildings stretch across the city. The Tolkuchka Bazaar — now relocated to a new site called the Altyn Asyr Market — is one of Central Asia's largest markets, offering a colorful array of carpets, silks, livestock, and goods.
Turkmenistan is one of the world's most isolated countries, with strict restrictions on foreign visitors, and Ashgabat is rarely visited by international tourists. However, those who do obtain a visa find a city of surreal architectural grandeur and genuine cultural interest, including Turkmen carpet museums, traditional crafts, and glimpses of a unique Central Asian society.
The city is connected to other parts of the country by road and rail, and Ashgabat International Airport links Turkmenistan to regional and international destinations. Ashgabat's combination of stark desert setting, extraordinary marble architecture, and Central Asian cultural heritage makes it one of the world's most distinctive and enigmatic capital cities.
