Athens
Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece, one of the world's oldest cities and the historical and intellectual cradle of Western civilization. With a population of approximately 660,000 in the city and over 3.7 million in the greater metropolitan area, Athens is the dominant urban center of the country and one of the most historically and culturally significant cities in the world. Located in the Attica Peninsula in southern Greece, the city is built around a series of rocky hills, most notably the Acropolis, which rises dramatically above the modern city as a symbol of ancient Greek achievement.
Athens's history spans more than 3,400 years of continuous habitation, making it one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. In the 5th century BCE, during the Classical period, Athens reached its zenith as the most powerful and influential city-state in the Greek world. Under leaders such as Pericles, the city became the birthplace of democracy — the political system that would eventually shape governance around the world — as well as the origin of Western philosophy (through Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle), theater, and many of the artistic and cultural traditions that define Western civilization. The Parthenon, completed in 432 BCE, stands as the pinnacle of ancient Greek architecture and art.
The Acropolis and its monuments are the centerpiece of Athenian heritage. The Parthenon, the Erechtheion with its iconic Caryatid porch, the Propylaea gateway, and the Temple of Athena Nike together form a complex of unparalleled historical and aesthetic significance. The Acropolis Museum, opened in 2009 at the foot of the hill, is a world-class institution housing the sculptures and artifacts from the Acropolis in stunning modern spaces with direct views of the ancient site. The Ancient Agora, the Theater of Dionysus — the world's first theater — the Temple of Hephaestus, and Hadrian's Library are among the many other extraordinary ancient sites within the city.
The Plaka neighborhood, Athens's oldest residential quarter huddled at the foot of the Acropolis, is a charming maze of neoclassical houses, Byzantine churches, tavernas, and shops. The central market of Athens (Varvakeios Agora), Monastiraki flea market, and the up-market Kolonaki district offer very different urban experiences within the city's diverse neighborhoods. Contemporary Athens has a vibrant arts scene, restaurant culture, and nightlife that make it one of Europe's more animated and youthful capitals.
Athens hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and again in 2004, leaving a legacy of world-class sports facilities. The Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos connects the city to destinations across Europe and beyond, and the Athens Metro provides efficient connections throughout the metropolitan area.
Athens's extraordinary layering of ancient monuments, Byzantine churches, Ottoman traces, neoclassical 19th-century architecture, and vibrant contemporary urban culture creates one of the most intellectually stimulating and visually spectacular cities in the world — a place where human civilization's most formative chapters are written in stone beneath an Aegean sky.
