Atlanta

Atlanta is the capital and largest city of the state of Georgia in the southeastern United States, located in the piedmont region of the Appalachian foothills at an elevation of approximately 320 meters above sea level. With a population of approximately 500,000 in the city proper and over 6 million in the greater metropolitan area, Atlanta is the ninth largest metropolitan area in the United States. It serves as the economic, cultural, and political capital of the American South and home to one of the world's busiest airports, making it a true global hub city.

Atlanta was founded in 1837 as the terminus of the Western and Atlantic Railroad, and its name was derived from this origin. The city grew rapidly as a railroad junction and commercial center, making it a strategic prize during the American Civil War. In 1864, Union General William Sherman captured and burned much of Atlanta before his famous March to the Sea — an event that devastated the city but from which it rose with remarkable speed, adopting the phoenix as its symbol. This story of destruction and rebirth has been central to Atlanta's civic mythology ever since.

Atlanta is internationally recognized as the birthplace of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of the most important civil rights leaders in American and world history. The Sweet Auburn neighborhood, where King was born and where Ebenezer Baptist Church — where both he and his father preached — still stands, is preserved as the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park. The National Center for Civil and Human Rights, located in the downtown Centennial Olympic Park area, is a powerful museum exploring the American civil rights movement and global human rights struggles.

The city hosted the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, an event that transformed its infrastructure, international profile, and self-image. Centennial Olympic Park, created for the Games, remains a central civic gathering space. Atlanta is also the global headquarters of major corporations including Coca-Cola, Delta Air Lines, CNN, The Home Depot, UPS, and many others, giving it one of the most significant concentrations of Fortune 500 companies of any American city.

Atlanta's cultural life is exceptionally rich. The city has a world-class music scene that has produced iconic artists across multiple genres including R&B, hip-hop, and country. The Beltline urban trail system has reinvigorated neighborhoods across the city, connecting parks, art installations, and communities. The High Museum of Art, Georgia Aquarium — the largest in the Western Hemisphere — and the World of Coca-Cola museum are among the city's major cultural attractions.

Atlanta's combination of corporate headquarters, civil rights heritage, culinary culture, and international connectivity — anchored by Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport — makes it one of the most consequential cities in the American South and an indispensable gateway to understanding modern America.
