Baden-Baden

Baden-Baden is an elegant spa city in the Black Forest region of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany, situated in the Oos River valley at the point where the Swabian Plain meets the northern Black Forest hills. For nearly two thousand years the city's naturally occurring thermal springs have drawn bathers seeking the curative properties of its hot mineral waters, and today Baden-Baden is one of Europe's most celebrated and exclusive wellness and spa destinations, combining thermal bathing with a grand casino, luxury hotels, and a cultural calendar of classical music and horse racing that maintains its traditional position as a resort of international distinction.

With a population of approximately 55,000, Baden-Baden is a small city whose international reputation and visitor numbers are disproportionate to its modest size. The city regularly tops lists of most attractive places to live in Germany and has a well-preserved town center of neoclassical and Belle Époque architecture that reflects its 19th-century golden age as the summer capital of Europe, when European royalty, aristocracy, and the wealthy classes gathered here each season for the waters, the casino, and the fashionable company of the international elite.

The thermal springs of Baden-Baden were known to the Roman legions stationed here in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, and the Romans built substantial bathing facilities, the Caracalla Baths, on the site of the current historic bathhouse district. The rediscovery of Roman bathing installations in the 19th century confirmed the ancient heritage that gives Baden-Baden its long association with therapeutic bathing. In the medieval period the Margraves of Baden maintained their residence here, and the Hohenbaden and Neues Schloss (New Castle) above the city are reminders of this political heritage.

The Friedrichsbad, a magnificent neo-Renaissance thermal bathing palace built between 1869 and 1877, is one of the most elaborate and beautiful bathing establishments in Europe, offering a 17-stage bathing ritual through a succession of pools of varying temperatures in a building of extraordinary architectural grandeur with painted ceilings, mosaic floors, and arched galleries. Mark Twain, who visited in the 1870s, famously declared that after bathing in the Friedrichsbad he had forgotten who he was for thirty minutes. The modern Caracalla Spa adjacent to the Friedrichsbad provides a more contemporary wellness experience, including outdoor pools open year-round.

The Casino of Baden-Baden, housed in the magnificent Kurhaus (Kurhaus) building from the 1820s, is one of the most beautiful gaming establishments in the world, its gilded salons in the French style rivaling those of Monte Carlo. Dostoyevsky is said to have lost all his money here, an experience that inspired his novella "The Gambler." The Casino and the Kurhaus serve as the social and ceremonial heart of Baden-Baden, providing venues for concerts, galas, and cultural events throughout the year.

The Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, the largest concert hall in Germany after the Cologne Philharmonie, hosts world-class performances of classical music and opera, including a major Easter Festival that has attracted the greatest conductors and soloists since its founding. The Kunsthalle Baden-Baden presents contemporary art exhibitions of international significance. The International Race Course at Iffezheim, one of the finest in Germany, hosts prestigious thoroughbred horse racing meetings each spring and autumn that maintain Baden-Baden's traditions as a resort of sporting elegance.

Baden-Baden is accessible by rail from Karlsruhe and via the Baden-Airpark from various European destinations. The surrounding Black Forest provides excellent hiking, cycling, and outdoor recreation through forested hills and valleys. The combination of world-class thermal bathing, exceptional casino, superb classical music programming, Black Forest scenery, and traditions of European resort elegance make Baden-Baden one of Germany's most distinctive and refined destinations.
