Baise

Baise (also romanized as Bose) is a prefecture-level city located in the western part of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China, near the border with Vietnam. With a population of approximately 3.6 million across the prefecture, Baise is an important administrative and commercial center in the mountainous western Guangxi region. The city sits at the confluence of the Youjiang and Nanpan rivers, in a landscape of dramatic karst limestone hills characteristic of southern China.

Baise has deep historical significance in the history of the Chinese Communist Party. In December 1929, Deng Xiaoping — who would later become the paramount leader of China and architect of its economic reforms — led the Baise Uprising, in which Red Army forces seized the city and established a short-lived Soviet-style revolutionary base area in western Guangxi. This event is regarded as one of the significant early chapters in the Chinese Communist revolution, and Baise takes considerable pride in this revolutionary heritage. The Baise Uprising Memorial Museum and related historical sites commemorate this period.

The natural environment around Baise is extraordinarily scenic. The Leye-Fengshan Global Geopark, located within the prefecture, is recognized by UNESCO for its extraordinary concentration of karst sinkholes, underground rivers, and cave systems. The Dashiwei Tiankeng (large sinkhole) cluster is among the world's most spectacular natural geological formations, featuring colossal collapsed cave chambers hundreds of meters deep with their own ecosystems. This region has gained growing recognition as a world-class destination for geological tourism and eco-adventure.

Baise is home to a significant Zhuang ethnic minority population, and the broader Guangxi region has the largest Zhuang population in China. Traditional Zhuang culture — including distinctive festivals, music, traditional costumes, and agricultural practices — enriches the cultural life of the city and surrounding villages. The Longlin Various Nationalities Autonomous County within the prefecture adds further ethnic diversity.

The Baise Bama Airport provides air connections to Nanning, Guangzhou, and Beijing. Road and rail connections link Baise to Nanning and to the broader regional network. The city has been developing tourism infrastructure to leverage its remarkable natural assets.

Baise's combination of revolutionary historical heritage, extraordinary geological natural wonders, ethnic minority cultural richness, and scenic mountain landscape make it a city of exceptional interest for those exploring the lesser-known regions of southern China.
