Baku

Baku is the capital and largest city of Azerbaijan, situated on the western shore of the Caspian Sea on the Absheron Peninsula. With a population of approximately 2.3 million people in the urban area, Baku is by far the largest city in Azerbaijan and one of the major cities of the South Caucasus region. It serves as the political, economic, cultural, and industrial center of Azerbaijan and has gained significant international recognition in recent decades as a dynamic and rapidly modernizing capital city.

The area around Baku has been inhabited since ancient times, and oil has been known here for thousands of years, with early travelers recording the existence of naturally seeping petroleum and flaming gas vents that inspired the region's ancient reputation as a land of eternal fires. The Zoroastrian fire temple of Ateshgah, located on the Absheron Peninsula, testifies to the sacred significance of these natural flames. The medieval walled Old City of Baku, known as Icheri Sheher, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves the city's historic urban fabric, including the iconic Maiden Tower, a mysterious 12th-century cylindrical tower of uncertain original purpose, and the 15th-century Palace of the Shirvanshahs.

The modern oil industry in Baku began in the 1870s when Azerbaijan emerged as one of the world's first major petroleum producers. By the late 19th century, the Baku oil fields were producing roughly half of the world's oil supply, attracting massive European investment and creating a class of oil barons who built the city's first grand European-style mansions and boulevards. This era of the first oil boom left a distinctive architectural legacy visible in the city center today. A second oil boom following Azerbaijan's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and the development of Caspian offshore fields has driven the extraordinary modern transformation of Baku's skyline.

Contemporary Baku is characterized by ambitious modern architecture that contrasts dramatically with its medieval core. The Flame Towers, three skyscrapers shaped like flames that dominate the Baku skyline and are illuminated at night with LED displays mimicking fire, have become symbols of the city's modern identity. The Heydar Aliyev Center, designed by the late architect Zaha Hadid with its sweeping white curves, is internationally acclaimed as a masterpiece of contemporary architecture. The renovated Baku Boulevard along the Caspian waterfront provides a scenic promenade for residents and visitors.

Baku's cultural life is vibrant, with the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic Hall, the Azerbaijan Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, numerous museums, and a growing contemporary art scene. The city gained considerable international exposure when it hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in 2012 and the inaugural European Games in 2015. The Baku Grand Prix, part of the Formula One world championship, takes place on a street circuit through the city center annually.

Azerbaijan State University of Economics and Baku State University are among the city's leading higher education institutions. Baku's multicultural heritage, shaped by Persian, Russian, Turkish, and Soviet influences, gives it a rich and layered cultural identity. With its ancient monuments, oil-fueled modernism, Caspian setting, and growing international profile, Baku is one of the most distinctive and rapidly evolving capitals in the world.
