Bāli

Bāli, usually written in English as Bally, lies in the state of West Bengal in eastern India, on the western bank of the Hooghly River in Howrah district. It sits directly across the water from the northern suburbs of Kolkata and forms a continuous part of that vast metropolitan area, occupying flat deltaic land only a few metres above sea level. The climate is hot and humid, with a heavy monsoon between June and September, a sticky pre monsoon season and a short, mild winter.

Around three hundred thousand people live here, in one of the older municipal areas of India, established in 1883 and later merged into the Howrah municipal corporation. Bāli has long been an industrial town, with jute mills, paper and cotton mills, engineering works, chemical plants and river based trade providing employment for generations of workers who came from Bengal, Bihar, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh.

The riverbank here has been settled for centuries, and its fortunes rose sharply in the nineteenth century when British enterprise turned the banks of the Hooghly into one of the great industrial corridors of Asia. Mills lined the water, barges carried jute and coal, and railway lines and bridges tied the district into the wider network. The area today reflects that layered past, with mill housing, colonial era warehouses, temples and busy commercial streets crowded along the ghats.

By far the most important place within its bounds is Belur Math, the international headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, founded by Swami Vivekananda in 1898. Set in tranquil gardens beside the river, the main temple is a remarkable building deliberately designed to combine Hindu, Islamic, Buddhist and Christian architectural elements as an expression of the unity of religions, so that it reads differently from every angle. Pilgrims and visitors come from all over the world, and the monastery's schools, hospitals and relief work extend across India. Across the river stands the Dakshineswar Kali temple, associated with the mystic Ramakrishna, and the two sites are linked by ferry and by bridge.

Those bridges are themselves landmarks. The Vivekananda Setu, opened in the 1930s and known locally as the Bally Bridge, carries road and rail traffic across the Hooghly, and the newer Nivedita Setu, a cable stayed span beside it, has eased the flow of vehicles between Kolkata and the national highway north.

Cultural life is thoroughly Bengali. Durga Puja in autumn transforms every neighbourhood with decorated pavilions, lights and music, and Kali Puja, Saraswati Puja and Rathayatra fill the rest of the calendar. Sweet shops, fish markets, football clubs and the tradition of unhurried conversation over tea define daily life.

Local trains on the Howrah line, the Grand Trunk Road, ferries across the river and the Kolkata metro extension provide dense transport connections, and schools and colleges serve the area with universities close at hand.

Bāli is significant as an industrial riverside town and as the home of one of the most important spiritual centres in modern India.
