Balikpapan
Balikpapan is a major city located on the eastern coast of Borneo (Kalimantan) in East Kalimantan Province, Indonesia, facing the Makassar Strait. With a population of approximately 700,000, it is the largest city in East Kalimantan and one of the most prosperous cities in Indonesia outside of Java. Strategically positioned on a natural harbor, Balikpapan serves as the main port and logistics hub for the oil and gas industry that dominates the region's economy.
The city's modern development is inextricably linked to petroleum. Oil was discovered in the Balikpapan area by the Dutch Shell company in 1897, and the subsequent development of oil production and refining made Balikpapan one of the most economically significant cities in the Dutch East Indies. During World War II, the city and its oil facilities were the target of fierce battles between Japanese and Allied forces, most notably in the Battles of Balikpapan in 1942 and 1945, which recognized its immense strategic value as a petroleum hub.
Today Balikpapan remains the base for major oil and gas operations in Kalimantan, including the Pertamina refinery complex — one of Indonesia's largest — and numerous international energy companies that have established regional offices here. The city functions as the operational headquarters for much of Indonesia's eastern oil and gas industry, attracting a significant expatriate professional community alongside its Indonesian workforce.
Balikpapan has gained a reputation as one of Indonesia's cleanest and most livable cities, regularly earning top rankings in national surveys for cleanliness, low crime, and quality of urban management. The city is known for its well-maintained parks, pleasant waterfront, and orderly streets. The Bekantan Monument and Balikpapan Bay offer scenic settings, while the Klandasan coast provides beachfront recreation. The Bukit Bangkirai rainforest park on the city's outskirts features an impressive canopy walkway through primary tropical forest.
Balikpapan's strategic importance has grown further as the Indonesian government selected nearby Penajam Paser Utara as the site for Nusantara, the country's new capital city, which is being constructed to replace Jakarta. This decision has dramatically elevated the profile of Balikpapan as the primary logistics and service gateway for the new capital project.
Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan International Airport is one of Indonesia's busiest airports outside Java, connecting Balikpapan to cities across Indonesia and some international destinations. Balikpapan's prosperity, cleanliness, and growing national importance as the gateway to Indonesia's new capital make it one of the most dynamic and significant cities in Indonesian Borneo.
