Bāndarban

Bāndarban is the headquarters town of Bandarban District, located in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of southeastern Bangladesh, near the borders with Myanmar and the Indian state of Mizoram. With a population of approximately 50,000 people in the town itself, it is a relatively small urban center, but it serves as the administrative hub for a large and spectacular mountainous region. Bāndarban District is the most mountainous and least densely populated district in Bangladesh, covered with lush green hills, dense forests, rivers, and waterfalls, making it the country's premier destination for trekking, nature tourism, and cultural exploration.

Bāndarban's most distinctive characteristic is its extraordinary ethnic and cultural diversity. The Chittagong Hill Tracts, of which Bāndarban is part, are home to numerous indigenous ethnic groups known collectively as the Jumma people, including the Marma, Bawm, Mro, Khumi, Khyang, Chak, and Tripura peoples among others. Each of these groups has its own language, cultural traditions, religious practices, and distinctive woven textiles. The Marma, who are Buddhists of Burmese origin, are the largest ethnic group in Bāndarban District. Their colorful traditional attire, festivals, and crafts are a prominent feature of local culture, and the numerous Buddhist temples and monasteries in the surrounding hills attest to the depth of Buddhist religious life in the area.

The natural landscape of Bāndarban District is extraordinarily beautiful. Keokradong, at 1,230 meters, was long considered the highest peak in Bangladesh, while Saka Haphong, also known as Bijoy, at 1,231 meters, is now recognized as the highest point in the country. Trekkers from across Bangladesh and internationally come to Bāndarban to attempt these peaks and to explore the network of trails through the forested mountains. The Boga Lake, a crystal-clear mountain lake at an elevation of around 1,200 meters, is one of the most spectacular natural wonders in Bangladesh and is a highlight of many trekking itineraries in the region. Waterfalls including the Nafakhum, Amiakhum, and Shailopropat are among the most visited natural attractions in the country.

The Sangu River flows through the Bāndarban area, and boat journeys along its upper reaches through forested gorges are an adventurous way to explore the remote interior of the district. Traditional river travel remains important in areas where road access is limited. The remote village communities of the Mro, Khumi, and other peoples maintain traditional ways of life including jhum cultivation, shifting agriculture in the hill forests, alongside their distinctive craft traditions.

The town of Bāndarban itself has a modest infrastructure with basic accommodation, restaurants, and market facilities. The Golden Temple, a Burmese-style Buddhist temple complex near the town, is one of the largest Buddhist religious sites in Bangladesh and attracts both pilgrims and tourists. The town's market area sells traditional handicrafts, woven textiles, and locally produced goods from the hill communities.

Bāndarban is accessible by road from Chittagong in approximately two to three hours. The district's unique combination of mountain scenery, indigenous cultural diversity, and adventure tourism potential makes it unlike any other place in Bangladesh and one of the most rewarding destinations for travelers seeking genuine natural and cultural experiences in South Asia.
