Baoshan
Baoshan is a prefecture-level city located in the western part of Yunnan Province in southwestern China, situated in the upper reaches of the Nujiang (Salween) River valley and its tributaries on the eastern slopes of the Hengduan Mountains. With a population of approximately 2.5 million, Baoshan occupies a strategically important position near the borders with Myanmar and at a crossroads of ancient trade and migration routes connecting China with Southeast Asia and South Asia.
The history of Baoshan is intimately connected to the ancient Southern Silk Road, also known as the Tea Horse Road or the Burma Road corridor. For over two thousand years, this route carried silk, tea, horses, and other goods between the Chinese interior and the Indian subcontinent via Burma (Myanmar). The city, known in antiquity as Yongchang, was an important waypoint for caravans and has maintained its role as a crossroads city throughout history. During World War II, the American-built Burma Road, connecting Lashio in Burma to Kunming in Yunnan, passed through the Baoshan area and was a vital supply route for the Allied forces in China, used to transport war materials after Japan cut off other supply routes.
The Wofo Temple (Sleeping Buddha Temple) and various ancient Buddhist temples in the city and surrounding countryside reflect the region's deep Buddhist heritage, influenced by both Chinese Han Buddhism and the Theravada Buddhist traditions that predominate in neighboring Southeast Asian countries. The Baoshan Circular City (Baoshan Yungcheng), an ancient earthen-walled town dating from the Ming Dynasty, is a rare surviving example of traditional circular town planning in Yunnan.
The surrounding landscape of Baoshan is extraordinarily diverse and beautiful. The Nujiang Grand Canyon, located in the broader Baoshan-Nujiang region, is one of the world's deepest river gorges, cutting through dramatic mountain scenery. The area is home to an extraordinary diversity of ethnic minority groups including the Nu, Lisu, Dai, and various other peoples, each with distinctive languages, costumes, and cultural traditions that make the region one of China's most ethnically diverse.
The local economy is based primarily on agriculture, with the area producing coffee — Baoshan is one of China's most important coffee-growing regions and increasingly recognized by specialty coffee enthusiasts for the quality of its Arabica beans. Walnuts, silkworm production, and various subtropical fruits also contribute to agricultural output. Mining of nonferrous metals adds industrial activity to the economy.
Baoshan has an airport with connections to Kunming, and improved road infrastructure has reduced travel times across this mountainous terrain. With its ancient Silk Road heritage, extraordinary natural landscapes, ethnic minority cultural richness, and emerging reputation in specialty coffee production, Baoshan is a captivating and distinctive city at the frontier of China's deep southwest.
