Bārāsat lies in the state of West Bengal in eastern India, about twenty five kilometres northeast of central Kolkata, on the flat deltaic plain of the lower Ganges. The land here is only a few metres above sea level, laced with ponds, canals and low lying fields, and the climate is hot and humid, with a powerful monsoon from June to September and a brief, agreeable winter when morning mist lies over the paddy.

The city has a population of around three hundred thousand and serves as the administrative headquarters of North 24 Parganas, one of the most populous districts in India. It forms part of the wider Kolkata metropolitan area, and a large share of its residents commute daily into the capital, though it retains its own busy market economy, small industries and rice trade.

Bārāsat has a long history as a stop on the road running northeast from Kolkata toward the Sundarbans and the frontier with what is now Bangladesh. Under British rule it became an administrative centre and, in the early nineteenth century, a district of indigo plantations, where European planters compelled local farmers to grow the dye crop under harsh conditions. The surrounding countryside was the scene of the uprising led by Titumir in 1831, who built a bamboo fortress at Narkelberia and resisted the planters and the East India Company until he was killed, an episode remembered as one of the earliest peasant revolts against colonial authority in Bengal. A memorial in the district commemorates him.

The city is famous throughout West Bengal for its Kali Puja. While Durga Puja dominates most of Bengal, Bārāsat channels its energy into the autumn festival of the goddess Kali, erecting enormous and inventive temporary pavilions that reproduce famous buildings, mythological scenes or contemporary themes, lit with elaborate illuminations. For several nights the streets fill with hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the region, and the competition between neighbourhood clubs is intense. Deepavali lights, food stalls and processions turn the whole city into a fairground.

Other points of interest include old zamindar houses, temples and mosques scattered through the older quarters, the busy Chapadali and Kolony Bazar markets, and green spaces such as the boating lake. Bengali cultural life is strong, with music schools, recitation, theatre and a lively tradition of adda, the unhurried conversation that Bengalis regard as an art form.

Bārāsat is an important educational centre, hosting West Bengal State University along with a government college of long standing and numerous schools, which brings students from across the district. It is also a major transport junction, with railway lines running toward Bangaon and Hasnabad, national highways heading north and east, and the international airport at Dum Dum only a short distance away, while buses and autorickshaws crowd every route.

Bārāsat matters as a district capital, a gateway between Kolkata and the countryside, and the home of one of Bengal's most spectacular festivals.
