Bariadi

Bariadi is a town in northern Tanzania and the administrative capital of Simiyu Region, one of the country's newest regions, created in 2012 from parts of Shinyanga and Mara. It lies on the dry, gently undulating plateau south-east of Lake Victoria, at an altitude of about twelve hundred metres, in a landscape of savanna, granite outcrops, acacia scrub and wide fields of maize and cotton. The town itself has a population in the tens of thousands, while the surrounding district counts several hundred thousand residents.

This is the heartland of the Sukuma, the largest ethnic group in Tanzania. Sukuma life traditionally combines farming with cattle keeping, and herds remain a measure of wealth and social standing throughout the district. The culture is famous for its competitive dance societies, whose rival groups perform elaborate routines, sometimes involving drums, medicines, porcupines or snakes, at gatherings that can last through the night. Sukuma proverbs, storytelling and drumming are widely known in East Africa, and cultural centres in the region work to record and pass on these traditions.

Bariadi grew as a rural service centre and its status changed sharply when it became a regional capital. Government offices, a regional hospital, banks, secondary schools and a growing commercial strip have appeared within a decade, and the town now functions as the hub for a region of well over one and a half million people. Trade in grain, cotton and livestock drives the local economy, and the cattle markets held on fixed days draw sellers from across the district.

Agriculture dominates. Cotton has long been the principal cash crop of the Lake Zone, alongside maize, sorghum, millet, rice, sunflowers and beans. Rainfall is unreliable and concentrated in two seasons, so water harvesting, small dams and irrigation projects are central concerns for local government, as is soil conservation in an area prone to erosion.

For visitors, the great attraction is the wildlife country to the north and east. Simiyu Region borders the Serengeti National Park, and the road running north from Bariadi towards Lamadi leads to one of the main southern entrances to the park, close to the route of the annual wildebeest migration. The Maswa Game Reserve, which adjoins the Serengeti to the south-west, lies within the region, and Lake Victoria with its fishing villages and island scenery is a comfortable drive away.

Roads have improved considerably in recent years, with a tarmac link connecting Bariadi towards Mwanza, Shinyanga and the main highway network, while mobile telephony and rural electrification have spread quickly.

Bariadi offers few formal tourist facilities, but it gives an honest picture of rural Tanzania: a young, fast-changing town at the meeting point of cattle culture, cotton farming and the great wildlife plains of the Serengeti.
