Basel
Basel is a city in northwestern Switzerland, situated at the point where the Rhine River turns north and forms the tripoint border between Switzerland, Germany, and France. A city of great intellectual, artistic, and commercial significance, Basel is best known internationally as the art capital of Switzerland and the home of Art Basel, the world's most prestigious contemporary art fair, which has transformed the city into a global center for the contemporary art market.
With a population of approximately 180,000 in the city and over 830,000 in the greater Trinational Metropolitan Region of Basel (extending into Germany and France), Basel is Switzerland's third-largest city and one of its most economically important. The city is the headquarters of several major pharmaceutical and chemical companies, including Novartis and Roche, whose campuses adjacent to the city have been developed with major works of contemporary architecture by Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry, Herzog & de Meuron, and other leading architects. This investment in architectural quality at the corporate level reflects Basel's broader commitment to design and the visual arts.
Basel's history stretches back to Roman times, and the city grew as an important Rhine crossing point and episcopal see. The University of Basel, founded in 1460 and the oldest in Switzerland, was the intellectual home of Erasmus of Rotterdam and later of the humanist tradition that shaped European thought in the 16th century. The Basel Cathedral (Basler Münster), a late Romanesque and Gothic structure of red sandstone, stands on a terrace above the Rhine and contains the tomb of Erasmus.
Basel has the highest density of museums per capita of any city in the world, with over 40 museums for its population. The Kunstmuseum Basel (Fine Arts Museum) is Switzerland's national fine arts museum and one of the most comprehensive art collections in Europe, with holdings that span from the 15th century to the contemporary. The Fondation Beyeler, located in the suburb of Riehen and designed by Renzo Piano, houses one of the world's great private art collections, including works by Monet, Cézanne, Picasso, and Warhol in a building of extraordinary spatial quality. The Museum für Gegenwartskunst (Museum of Contemporary Art) and Schaulager are further internationally significant art institutions.
Art Basel, the annual art fair held each June, is the premier event in the international contemporary art market, drawing gallery owners, collectors, curators, and artists from around the world. The simultaneous Basel art week programming fills the city's museums, galleries, and public spaces with events and exhibitions of global significance.
Basel is served by EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, shared with France and Germany, with extensive European connections. The city's SBB railway station is one of the most important rail junctions in Europe. Trams provide excellent urban public transport, and the city is highly walkable.
Basel is a city where art, architecture, science, and European humanism converge in a compact, civilized, and distinctly sophisticated urban environment.
