Bellinzona
Bellinzona is the capital of the canton of Ticino in southern Switzerland, located in the narrow Rhine valley where several alpine valleys converge before the terrain opens into the Po Plain of northern Italy. With a population of approximately 44,000 inhabitants, Bellinzona occupies a strategically critical position that determined its importance throughout history as the guardian of the main trans-alpine route between central Europe and the Italian peninsula. The city is distinguished as the site of three medieval castles that together formed one of the most impressive defensive systems in the Alps, and which were inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2000.
The three castles of Bellinzona — Castelgrande, Montebello, and Sasso Corbaro — rise dramatically from rocky prominences overlooking the city and the valley, connected by a system of fortified walls that once stretched across the entire width of the valley floor. Castelgrande, the oldest and most prominent, occupies a massive rocky outcrop directly above the old town and contains two well-preserved towers dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. The castle has been extensively restored and now houses museums and a restaurant, with the rocky courtyard serving as an outdoor events venue. Montebello and Sasso Corbaro, smaller but equally impressive, offer panoramic views from their hilltop positions and contain further historical exhibitions.
The character of Bellinzona reflects its position as the southernmost Swiss canton, where Swiss efficiency and order meet Mediterranean warmth and Italian culture. The official language of Ticino is Italian, and the city feels distinctly Italian in its street life, cuisine, architecture, and social culture. The Piazza Collegiata, dominated by the Collegiate Church of Saints Peter and Stephen with its elegant Renaissance facade, is the historic heart of the old town and a natural gathering place for residents. The Saturday market held in the piazza and surrounding streets is one of the most lively and colorful in Ticino.
Bellinzona's old town, clustered below Castelgrande, contains a pleasant mix of arcaded streets, medieval buildings, Renaissance palaces, and traditional Ticinese architecture. The Palazzo Civico (Town Hall) is a fine example of Ticinese civic Renaissance architecture. Several excellent restaurants in the old town offer authentic Ticinese cuisine, which draws on both northern Italian and Swiss traditions to produce dishes such as risotto, polenta, ossobuco, and an array of excellent local wines from the Merlot grapes that dominate Ticino viticulture.
The city serves as an excellent base for exploring the natural and cultural riches of Ticino. The Verzasca Valley, famous for its emerald-green river and the Verzasca Dam (known from the James Bond film GoldenEye), is within easy reach, as are the Maggia Valley, Lake Lugano, and Lake Maggiore. The scenic Gotthard railway route, one of the most spectacular mountain railway journeys in Europe, passes through Bellinzona.
Bellinzona's UNESCO-listed castles, Italian-Swiss cultural character, excellent cuisine, and position at the gateway to some of Switzerland's most beautiful alpine scenery make it a destination of genuine importance and appeal, one that richly rewards visitors who venture beyond the better-known Swiss cities.
