Benxi

Benxi is a prefecture-level city located in the southeastern part of Liaoning Province in northeastern China, approximately 50 kilometers southeast of Shenyang. Situated among forested mountains along the Taizi River, the city has a population of approximately 1.7 million and is known for its heavy industry, particularly iron and steel production, as well as for harboring one of the world's most remarkable cave systems.

The history of Benxi as an industrial city is tied to the development of Manchuria during the early 20th century. The area's rich deposits of iron ore and coal made it highly attractive to industrialists and colonial powers, and during the Japanese occupation of Manchuria from 1931 to 1945, Benxi was developed as a major center for iron and steel production. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, Benxi continued to be an important steel-producing city, with the Benxi Iron and Steel Group becoming one of the major state-owned enterprises in China's metallurgical industry.

Benxi's most extraordinary natural attraction is the Benxi Water Cave, discovered in 1975, which is recognized as the world's longest navigable underground river cave. The cave system extends for nearly 6 kilometers, with visitors traveling by boat along a subterranean river that winds through vast caverns adorned with stalactites and stalagmites of extraordinary shapes and sizes. The illuminated cave system, with its crystal-clear underground waters, is one of the most spectacular geological attractions in northeastern China and draws large numbers of visitors annually.

The surrounding landscape offers further natural attractions. The Benxi National Forest Park covers vast areas of temperate broadleaf forest that display spectacular autumn colors, making the area around Benxi one of the most celebrated autumn foliage destinations in northeastern China. The Guan Mountain Nature Reserve protects a significant area of natural forest and is home to a variety of wildlife including red-crowned cranes and other protected species.

Historical sites in the area include the Miaohou Temple and various ancient castle ruins that reflect the region's long history of settlement and conflict. The local culture is characteristic of northeastern China, with warm and hospitable people, hearty cuisine featuring stews, dumplings, and grilled meat, and a tradition of winter activities during the long, cold season.

The city's economy, while still anchored in steel production, has faced the challenges of industrial restructuring that affect many old industrial cities in northeastern China. Tourism, particularly to the Water Cave and the autumn foliage scenic areas, has become an increasingly important part of the local economy. With its remarkable underground cave, beautiful forested mountains, and industrial heritage, Benxi offers a distinctive profile among the cities of Liaoning Province.
