Berat

Berat is a historic city in central Albania, often called the "City of a Thousand Windows" due to its distinctive Ottoman-era houses with rows of large windows cascading down the hillsides above the Osum River gorge. Located approximately 122 kilometers south of Tirana, Berat sits at the confluence of history and landscape, surrounded by mountains and offering some of the most striking urban scenery in the Western Balkans.

With a population of around 60,000, Berat is modest in size but carries extraordinary cultural and historical significance. In 2008, UNESCO inscribed Berat as a World Heritage Site alongside Gjirokastër, recognizing its exceptional preservation of Ottoman-era urban planning and architecture. The city's layered past reaches back over 2,400 years, with roots in Illyrian, Byzantine, Bulgarian, and Ottoman civilizations all leaving visible traces across the cityscape.

Founded by the Illyrians around the 4th century BC, Berat was later known as Antipatrea under Greek influence and Pulcheriopolis under Byzantine rule. The Ottomans took control in the 15th century and left a lasting architectural imprint that defines much of the city today. The Berat Castle, a massive medieval fortress perched on a rocky hill above the river, remains inhabited to this day and shelters Byzantine churches, a mosque, and traditional stone houses within its walls.

Among the castle's highlights are the Church of the Holy Trinity and the Church of Saint Mary of Blachernae, both celebrated for their remarkable Byzantine frescoes. The Onufri National Museum, housed within the castle complex, displays religious icons and the extraordinary 16th-century works of Onufri, an Albanian master painter renowned for his vivid red pigments and extraordinary detail. The city is divided into two historic quarters: Mangalem on the west bank, with its famous stacked Ottoman houses, and Gorica on the east bank, connected by a stone arch bridge.

Berat's cultural life is vibrant despite its small size. Local festivals, traditional music, and craft markets reflect deep-rooted Albanian traditions. The city is home to the University of Berat "Aleksandër Moisiu," contributing to the region's academic and intellectual life. Traditional crafts including woodcarving, silver jewelry, and weaving continue to be practiced by local artisans.

Transportation links are straightforward, with regular bus services connecting Berat to Tirana and other Albanian cities. The compact historic center is best explored on foot, and the narrow cobblestone lanes of Mangalem and Gorica reward leisurely exploration. The surrounding region offers additional attractions including natural gorges and traditional villages.

Berat is celebrated for its warm hospitality, traditional cuisine featuring lamb dishes, byrek pastries, and locally produced raki. The city remains refreshingly free from mass tourism, offering visitors an authentic encounter with Albanian culture and history. Whether watching the sun set over the castle from the riverbank or wandering through centuries-old streets, Berat offers a deeply rewarding experience that stands among the most remarkable destinations in southeastern Europe.
