Bergen

Bergen is Norway's second-largest city, situated on the southwestern coast between seven mountains and the entrance to the Sognefjord, the world's longest and deepest fjord. Known as the gateway to the fjords, Bergen is one of Scandinavia's most scenic cities, combining a well-preserved medieval harbor with vibrant cultural life and easy access to some of Norway's most dramatic natural landscapes.

With a population of approximately 290,000, Bergen is the capital of Vestland county and an important hub for shipping, fish exports, and the offshore oil and gas industry. The city enjoys a mild but very wet climate — it is one of the rainiest cities in Europe — which gives the surrounding hillsides and valleys an intensely green appearance that locals embrace as part of the city's character.

Bergen was founded around 1070 and quickly grew into a major trading port. During the Middle Ages, it was one of the most important cities in northern Europe, serving as the capital of Norway and a key hub in the Hanseatic League's trading network. The legacy of this era is preserved in Bryggen, the old wharf district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring a row of colorful wooden warehouses dating to the 14th and 15th centuries. Today these distinctive buildings house museums, restaurants, galleries, and craft shops.

The Fish Market at Torget, operating since the Middle Ages, remains one of Bergen's most beloved institutions. Fresh seafood — shrimp, salmon, crab, and whale — is sold daily from open stalls along the waterfront. Nearby, the Bergenhus Fortress complex includes Håkonshallen, a royal banquet hall from the 13th century, and Rosenkrantz Tower, offering sweeping views over the harbor. The Fløibanen funicular climbs to the top of Mount Fløyen in under eight minutes, providing panoramic views of the city, harbor, and surrounding fjords.

Bergen has a rich cultural tradition. It was the birthplace of composer Edvard Grieg, and the Grieg Museum at his home Troldhaugen is a major cultural attraction. KODE, one of Scandinavia's largest art museum complexes, spans four buildings around Lille Lungegårdsvannet lake and houses extensive collections of Norwegian and international art. The Bergen International Festival, held each spring, is one of the largest festivals of performing arts in the Nordic countries.

The city is a major transit hub for exploring western Norway. Bergen Airport Flesland connects the city to destinations across Europe and beyond, while the scenic Flåm Railway and regular ferry services take visitors deep into the fjords. The Bergen Light Rail provides efficient public transport within the city.

Bergen's unique combination of history, natural drama, and cultural vitality makes it one of Europe's most beloved cities. Whether arriving by sea, air, or the celebrated Bergen Railway from Oslo, visitors immediately sense the city's singular character.
