Bhātāra
Bhātāra is a large urban area in the north-eastern part of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. It forms a thana and a set of wards within Dhaka North City Corporation, bordered by Badda to the south, Gulshan and Baridhara to the west and the low-lying floodplain of the Balu River to the east. The district includes the planned neighbourhood of Bashundhara, along with Nadda, Kuril and Joar Sahara, and it lies immediately south of the international airport.
Several hundred thousand people live in the area, and the number continues to climb as the city expands eastward onto reclaimed wetland. Bhātāra has become one of the most dynamic parts of Dhaka, containing corporate headquarters, private universities, hospitals, convention centres and residential blocks that range from luxury apartments to dense informal settlements.
Until the late twentieth century this was rural land, a patchwork of paddy fields, ponds and villages on the edge of the capital. The construction of Baridhara and Gulshan as diplomatic and elite residential zones pushed development northward, and from the 1990s the filling of low-lying land created the Bashundhara Residential Area, one of the largest private housing projects in the country. The pace of change has been extraordinary, and within a single generation farmland has become a district of high-rise towers.
The most prominent landmark is Jamuna Future Park, among the largest shopping malls in South Asia, with hundreds of shops, cinemas and a rooftop amusement area. The Bangabandhu Bangladesh China Friendship Exhibition Centre and the International Convention City Bashundhara host trade fairs and major events, including the annual Dhaka International Trade Fair. The 300 Feet Road, formally the Purbachal Expressway, is a broad landscaped highway that has become a favourite place for evening drives, cycling and roadside food stalls. Nearby, the Kuril flyover and the elevated expressway have reshaped the skyline.
Life here reflects the wider culture of Dhaka. Mosques, rickshaw traffic, street food stands selling fuchka and kebabs, and crowded tea shops sit alongside cafés and international restaurants that serve a young professional population. Bengali festivals such as Pohela Boishakh and the two Eids fill the streets, and cricket is followed with total devotion, with informal matches played on any open ground.
Transport is a defining issue. The area is served by main roads towards the airport, by the elevated expressway, and by the extensive bus and rickshaw networks that carry most residents, though congestion is severe. Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is only a few kilometres away, and the expanding metro rail network is planned to improve access further.
Education is a particular strength. North South University, the country's first private university, and Independent University Bangladesh both have campuses in Bashundhara, along with the Independent University teaching hospital and several international schools, giving the district a large student presence.
Bhātāra matters as the frontier of Dhaka's growth. It shows both the ambition and the strain of one of the fastest-expanding cities in the world, and it has become the location where much of the capital's business, education and shopping now takes place.
