Bhīlwāra

Bhīlwāra is a city in the southern part of the Indian state of Rajasthan, lying on the plateau between the Aravalli hills and the Mewar plain. It stands about 150 kilometres north-east of Udaipur and a similar distance south-west of Ajmer, in dry, open country crossed by the Banas River. The landscape is one of scattered rocky ridges, fields of maize and mustard, and small fortified villages.

The population is roughly four hundred thousand. Bhīlwāra is known throughout India as a textile city, and it is often called the Manchester of Rajasthan. Hundreds of mills, dyeing houses and processing units make it one of the country's leading producers of polyester suiting fabric, exported across Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The district is also rich in minerals, and the Rampura Agucha mine nearby is one of the largest zinc mines in the world.

The area formed part of the historic kingdom of Mewar, ruled from Chittorgarh and later Udaipur, and its story is bound up with the long resistance of the Sisodia rulers to the Delhi sultans and the Mughals. The name is usually explained by reference to the Bhil people, the indigenous community of the Aravalli forests, or to an old mint that operated here. The town remained modest until the middle of the twentieth century, when the arrival of textile manufacturing after independence changed it completely, drawing workers and entrepreneurs from across the region.

The best-known religious site is the Harni Mahadev temple, dedicated to Shiva and set among low hills at the edge of the city. Badnore and Mandalgarh forts, both within the district, recall the military past of Mewar, and the Menal waterfall, surrounded by eleventh-century temples in a wooded ravine, is a favourite monsoon excursion. Shahpura is known for its Phad paintings, long narrative scrolls used by travelling storytellers, a folk art recognised across India. The great fort of Chittorgarh, a World Heritage Site, lies within easy reach to the south.

Cultural life is Rajasthani in character, with folk singing, puppet theatre, and vivid celebrations of Holi, Teej and Gangaur. The city gained national attention in 2020 when its administration contained an early coronavirus outbreak so effectively that the approach was studied elsewhere in the country. Local food follows Mewari tradition, built around dal, bati and churma, sweets made with gram flour, and the fiery chillies of the region.

Transport is provided by the broad-gauge railway line running between Ajmer and Udaipur, by national highways connecting the city to Jaipur, Kota and Udaipur, and by the airports at Udaipur and Jaipur. Buses and auto-rickshaws serve local needs, and freight traffic from the mills is heavy.

Education includes engineering and management colleges, a medical college and the well-regarded textile institute that trains technicians for the local industry, along with campuses of Rajasthan's state universities.

Bhīlwāra is significant as an example of industrial success in a dry and historically poor region, combining a modern manufacturing economy with the forts, temples and folk traditions of old Mewar.
