Białystok

Białystok is the largest city in northeastern Poland and the capital of the Podlaskie Voivodeship, lying on the Biała River about fifty kilometres from the border with Belarus. The surrounding region is one of the least industrialised and most thickly wooded parts of the country, close to the Knyszyn Forest, the Biebrza marshes and the primeval woodland of Białowieża. The climate here is the coldest in Poland, with long snowy winters and warm summers.

Around two hundred and ninety thousand people live in the city. It is the economic and administrative centre of a largely agricultural region, with industries in food processing, machinery, agricultural equipment, medical devices and textiles, the last a legacy of the nineteenth century when Białystok was a major cloth manufacturing town sometimes described as the Manchester of the north.

The city's golden age came in the eighteenth century under Jan Klemens Branicki, a great magnate who transformed his provincial residence into one of the most splendid baroque ensembles in the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Branicki Palace, with its formal gardens, pavilions and gateways, was known as the Versailles of Podlasie and now houses the Medical University. The town hall on the market square, an unusual building that served as a covered market rather than a seat of government, dates from the same period and holds the Podlaskie Museum.

Białystok has always been a place of many cultures. Poles, Jews, Belarusians, Lithuanians, Russians and Tatars lived side by side, and it was in this multilingual environment that Ludwik Zamenhof, born here in 1859, conceived Esperanto as a neutral international language. The Jewish community, which formed a majority of the population before the Second World War, was destroyed during the German occupation, and the ghetto uprising of 1943 is commemorated in the city. Today Białystok has the largest Orthodox Christian population of any Polish city, and the Church of the Holy Spirit is the biggest Orthodox church in the country, standing alongside the neo Gothic Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption.

Cultural life is lively, with the Podlaskie Opera and Philharmonic in a striking modern building, the Białystok Puppet Theatre, several festivals of music and theatre and a growing reputation for street art on the walls of housing estates. Planty Park, the palace gardens and the Zwierzyniec forest give the city an unusually green character.

Buses form the backbone of public transport, and rail lines run to Warsaw in about two hours and towards Lithuania on the Rail Baltica corridor. The regional airport handles limited traffic, with Warsaw serving international connections.

Academic life centres on the University of Białystok, the Białystok University of Technology and the Medical University, which together attract tens of thousands of students.

The city is an excellent base for exploring the wooden villages, Tatar mosques at Kruszyniany and Bohoniki, wetlands and bison forests of the region, and it is valued for its blend of baroque grandeur, religious diversity and easy access to wild nature.
