Biñan lies in the province of Laguna on the island of Luzon, on the southwestern shore of Laguna de Bay, the largest lake in the Philippines. It sits about thirty five kilometres south of Manila, on gently rising ground between the lakeshore and the wooded slopes leading toward Tagaytay. The tropical climate is warm all year, with a pronounced rainy season from June to November and hot, bright months from March to May.

With a population of around four hundred thousand, Biñan is one of the larger cities in the province and part of the rapidly growing industrial belt south of the capital. It was granted city status in 2010, recognising a transformation from an agricultural town into a manufacturing and residential centre. Large industrial parks within and around its boundaries host electronics, semiconductor, automotive parts and food companies, many of them Japanese, Korean and American, and these plants employ tens of thousands of workers from across southern Luzon.

Its history reaches back to the Spanish period, when Biñan was established as a town in the late sixteenth century and grew wealthy from sugar, rice and trade around the lake. Prosperous families built stone and hardwood houses around the plaza, and a number of these bahay na bato survive, giving the old centre a heritage character now being restored and promoted. The most famous of them is the ancestral house of the Alberto family, connected to the mother of José Rizal, the national hero. Rizal himself was sent to Biñan as a boy of eleven to study Latin and Spanish under a local schoolmaster, and this first experience away from home is recorded in his memoirs, making the town a place of pilgrimage for students of Philippine history. A monument and a restored schoolhouse commemorate the episode.

The parish church of San Isidro Labrador, the patron of farmers, anchors the town plaza, and its fiesta each May fills the streets with processions, brass bands and street dancing. Biñan is also known for a distinctive local delicacy, a soft yellow rice cake sold at roadside stalls and served with grated coconut, which visitors often buy by the boxful on their way through.

Everyday life mixes the old and the new. Traditional markets and heritage houses stand within sight of shopping malls, subdivisions and expressway interchanges. Tricycles and jeepneys handle short journeys, while the South Luzon Expressway, a rebuilt commuter railway and a network of buses connect the city to Manila and to the resorts and hot springs of Laguna. Nearby are the waterfalls of Pagsanjan, the crater lake at Tagaytay and the pilgrimage sites of the province.

Several universities and colleges serve the city, and its young workforce is a major attraction for employers. Local government has invested in parks, sports facilities and heritage conservation to balance rapid growth.
