Birkenhead is a town in Merseyside in north-west England, standing on the Wirral Peninsula directly across the River Mersey from Liverpool. The waterfront looks over the river to the famous Liverpool skyline, while behind it lie the docks, the residential streets of Oxton and Prenton, and the open countryside of the Wirral beyond. It is the largest town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral.

About one hundred and fifty thousand people live in the town and its immediate suburbs. Its significance has always been maritime. Birkenhead grew as a shipbuilding and dock town, and the Cammell Laird yard, founded in the 1820s, built vessels that ranged from the first iron ship on the Mersey to modern warships and the polar research vessel Sir David Attenborough, keeping the tradition alive today.

The town takes its name from a Benedictine priory founded around 1150, whose ruins still stand near the river and are the oldest buildings on Merseyside. The monks operated the ferry across the Mersey, a service that has run in some form ever since. Birkenhead remained a village of a few hundred people until the nineteenth century, when William Laird laid out an ambitious new town on a grid plan and built the shipyard. Growth was extraordinarily fast, and the town became a centre of engineering, docks and heavy industry, suffering severe bombing during the Second World War and a long decline in shipbuilding afterwards.

Birkenhead Park, opened in 1847, is the most historically important landmark. It was the first publicly funded park in the world, designed by Joseph Paxton, and its lakes, bridges and winding paths directly inspired Frederick Law Olmsted when he designed Central Park in New York. Hamilton Square, laid out in Georgian style, has more Grade I listed buildings than any square in England outside Trafalgar Square. Other attractions include the Williamson Art Gallery, the Wirral Transport Museum with its heritage trams, and the U-boat Story, where a surrendered German submarine is displayed. The Mersey Ferry remains the classic way to arrive.

Birkenhead has a strong local identity, distinct from Liverpool despite the proximity. Tranmere Rovers, one of the oldest football clubs in England, draws loyal support at Prenton Park. The town has produced writers, musicians and comedians, and the poet Wilfred Owen grew up here. Markets, working men's clubs and a lively music scene shape everyday life.

Transport connections are unusually good. The Queensway road tunnel, opened in 1934, and the Merseyrail underground line both run beneath the river, giving journeys to central Liverpool of only a few minutes. The M53 motorway heads down the peninsula, and Liverpool John Lennon Airport is a short distance away. The world's first street tramway for passengers opened here in 1860.

Education includes sixth form and further education colleges, with universities in Liverpool and Chester close at hand.

Birkenhead matters as a town that gave the world its first public park and helped build the modern merchant fleet. Its river views, Georgian squares and maritime heritage reward anyone who crosses the Mersey to see them.
