Bonn
Bonn is a historic city on the banks of the Rhine River in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in western Germany, located approximately 30 kilometers south of Cologne. The city is best known internationally as the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven, the towering composer whose music transformed the Western classical tradition, and as the former capital of West Germany from 1949 to 1990, during which time it served as the seat of the West German government through the decades of the postwar economic miracle and the Cold War. Though reunification and the return of Germany's capital functions to Berlin diminished its political role, Bonn has reinvented itself as a center for international organizations, science, and cultural life.
With a population of approximately 335,000, Bonn is a vibrant and prosperous city with the University of Bonn, one of Germany's most prestigious research universities, contributing significantly to its intellectual and cultural character. The city hosts the headquarters of numerous United Nations agencies and international organizations, which together with the university give it a strongly international atmosphere. Bonn is also home to several major German media and telecommunications companies including Deutsche Telekom and Deutsche Post DHL Group.
The history of Bonn is ancient. The Roman legionary camp of Castra Bonnensia, established in the 1st century AD, was a major military base on the Rhine frontier, and the city grew from this military foundation. In the medieval period it became the principal residence of the Archbishops of Cologne, and the Electoral Residence Palace built in the 18th century served as their court. This Baroque palace, now the main building of Bonn University, is one of the most elegant university buildings in Germany.
The Beethoven-Haus, the house where Ludwig van Beethoven was born in 1770, is the most important pilgrimage site for music lovers in Bonn, preserved as a museum with the largest collection of Beethoven memorabilia in the world, including the ear trumpets he used as he became deaf, early manuscripts, and personal correspondence. The Beethoven Festival, held annually in Bonn, is one of the premier classical music festivals in Germany, celebrating the composer's legacy in concerts throughout the city. The magnificent Münster Basilica, a Romanesque church of the 11th century, is the finest architectural monument of the historic center.
The museum mile of Bonn, the Museumsmeile, is a concentration of important museums including the Kunstmuseum Bonn with an exceptional collection of 20th-century German art, the Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland documenting the history of postwar West Germany, the Deutsches Museum Bonn presenting highlights of German science and technology, and the Kunsthalle Bonn presenting major touring exhibitions. This concentration of world-class institutions along a single boulevard makes Bonn's museum offering exceptional for a city of its size.
The Rhine Valley south of Bonn, the Siebengebirge (Seven Hills), offers beautiful landscape for hiking and cycling, with castle ruins above vineyards and river views. The Drachenfels ruins above the Rhine, easily reachable by the oldest rack railway in Germany, offer panoramic views that inspired both Byron and Beethoven. The market square of Bonn, surrounded by the baroque Rathaus (City Hall) and lively cafes, is a pleasant gathering place that reflects the city's relaxed Rhenish character.
Bonn is connected to Cologne, Frankfurt, and the wider German ICE high-speed network. The combination of Beethoven heritage, excellent museum concentration, pleasant Rhine setting, strong university culture, and international organization presence make Bonn one of western Germany's most intellectually and culturally rewarding medium-sized cities.
