Bozhou

Bozhou is a prefecture-level city in northern Anhui Province in eastern China, situated on the Guo River plain near the borders of Henan and Jiangsu provinces. With a population of approximately 5.2 million people in the prefecture, Bozhou occupies a special place in Chinese cultural history as the birthplace of two of the most towering figures in classical Chinese civilization: the philosopher Laozi, founder of Taoism, and the military strategist Cao Cao, founder of the kingdom of Wei in the Three Kingdoms period.

Bozhou's history stretches back over three thousand years and it appears in historical records as an important settlement during the Shang and Zhou dynasties. The city served as an important administrative and commercial center in the Central Plains region through various dynasties. Its exceptional historical significance comes from its association with Laozi, the philosopher traditionally credited with authoring the Tao Te Ching, one of the most influential texts in Chinese and world philosophy, and with Cao Cao, the brilliant and controversial military and political leader whose story forms the centerpiece of the classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

The city is perhaps most famous today in modern China for being one of the country's most important centers of traditional Chinese medicine. Bozhou hosts one of the largest traditional Chinese herbal medicine markets in the world, the China Zhonghua Medicine Market, where hundreds of millions of yuan worth of dried herbs, roots, seeds, and medicinal preparations change hands daily. This market draws buyers and sellers from across China and from international herbal medicine markets, and the city's expertise in growing, processing, and trading traditional medicinal plants has made it a globally significant hub for this ancient industry.

The Cao Cao Underground Military Passage, an extensive network of tunnels said to have been constructed under Cao Cao's orders to enable troop movements without exposure, is preserved as a major historical attraction beneath the city's streets and is one of the most unusual archaeological sites in China. The Flower Temple dedicated to Laozi and the Taoism cultural complex in the city honor the philosophical giant born here.

Transportation in Bozhou includes expressways connecting the city to Hefei, Zhengzhou, and other regional centers, along with railway services to the national network. Infrastructure investment has improved accessibility in recent years.

Several universities and medical colleges in Bozhou specialize in traditional Chinese medicine education and research, reinforcing the city's identity as a center of this ancient healing tradition.

Bozhou's extraordinary combination of philosophical significance, military historical legacy, and living traditional medicine industry makes it one of China's most culturally distinctive cities, a place where some of the deepest roots of Chinese civilization remain visible and economically relevant in the present day.
