Braga

Braga is a historic city in northwestern Portugal, located in the Minho region at the foot of the Sameiro hill. As one of the oldest cities in Portugal and the religious capital of the country, Braga is a place of profound historical significance, known for its magnificent churches, vibrant student life, and a dynamic blend of ancient tradition and modern energy.

With a population of approximately 200,000, Braga is the third-largest city in Portugal and the capital of the Braga District. In recent years it has earned recognition as one of Portugal's most innovative cities, attracting technology startups, international companies, and a growing community of digital professionals. The University of Minho, with campuses in Braga and Guimarães, anchors a substantial student population that contributes to the city's lively atmosphere and progressive character.

Braga's history reaches back over two millennia. It was an important Roman city known as Bracara Augusta and later became the seat of the Archbishop of Braga, the Primate of Portugal, giving the city enormous ecclesiastical prestige throughout the Middle Ages and beyond. This religious heritage is reflected in the extraordinary density of churches and sacred buildings within the city, earning it the nickname City of Archbishops.

The Braga Cathedral, begun in the 11th century and extensively expanded over subsequent centuries, is the oldest cathedral in Portugal. Its treasury holds outstanding examples of medieval religious art and silver. The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, one of Portugal's most iconic landmarks, stands on a wooded hillside outside the city and is reached by a monumental Baroque stairway adorned with chapels representing the Stations of the Cross or by a hydraulic funicular dating from 1882. The view from the terrace at the top is breathtaking.

Braga celebrates Easter with some of the most elaborate and theatrical Holy Week processions in the Iberian Peninsula, drawing tens of thousands of pilgrims and visitors. The medieval market Braga Romana each spring recreates life in the Roman city with costumed participants, gladiator contests, and artisan stalls. The Semana Académica, or Academic Week, is an exuberant student festival held each spring that fills the city with concerts and events.

The city has excellent road and rail connections. High-speed trains link Braga to Porto in about 30 minutes, and from Porto to Lisbon takes under three hours. The A3 motorway runs south to Porto and north to the Spanish border. Porto Airport is about 50 kilometers away and serves as the main international gateway for the region.

Braga offers an unusually complete experience of Portuguese civilization — Roman ruins, Baroque grandeur, medieval faith, and a thriving modern city — all within a compact and walkable center.
