Brakpan
Brakpan lies in Gauteng province in the northeastern interior of South Africa, on the high grassland plateau known as the Highveld, some forty kilometres east of Johannesburg. At an altitude of over sixteen hundred metres the air is thin and clear, summers are warm with dramatic afternoon thunderstorms, and winters are dry, sunny and cold at night. The name comes from the Afrikaans words for a brackish pan, a reference to the shallow salt tinged lakes that dot the surrounding plain.
Including its townships, the wider Brakpan area is home to a few hundred thousand people. Since 2000 it has formed part of the City of Ekurhuleni, the metropolitan municipality that unites the industrial towns of the East Rand into one of the most important manufacturing regions on the African continent.
The town owes its existence to gold. When the great reef of the Witwatersrand was traced eastward at the end of the nineteenth century, mines were sunk here, and coal seams close to the surface provided fuel for the pumps and stamp mills. A settlement grew around the shafts, gaining municipal status in 1919, and for decades its fortunes rose and fell with the price of gold. Power stations, brickworks and engineering shops followed, and the surrounding landscape was reshaped by mine dumps, headgears and slimes dams that remain a distinctive feature of the horizon. As mining declined in the later twentieth century the local economy diversified into manufacturing, logistics and services, and the neighbouring townships of Tsakane and Langaville grew into substantial communities with their own histories of struggle during the apartheid years.
The best known landmark today is Carnival City, a large entertainment complex with a casino, theatres, restaurants and a big top styled arena that hosts concerts and boxing events drawing audiences from across the province. Brakpan is also remembered for its drive in cinema, once among the largest in the world, and the town retains a strong sporting culture centred on rugby, football and motor racing. Art deco and early twentieth century buildings survive around the old civic centre, and several parks and the pans themselves provide green space.
Birdwatchers are drawn to the nearby Blesbokspruit wetland, a protected site of international importance where herons, flamingos and waterfowl gather among the reeds, an unexpected haven in the middle of an industrial landscape. Local museums and heritage trails tell the story of mining life, migrant labour and the communities that grew around the shafts.
Brakpan is well connected by highways to Johannesburg, Pretoria and the country's largest airport at O R Tambo, which lies a short drive away. Commuter trains, buses and a vast network of minibus taxis carry most residents, and technical colleges serve the region alongside universities in the neighbouring cities.
Brakpan offers an honest picture of South African industrial life, shaped by gold, marked by history and now finding a new role within a sprawling metropolitan region.
