Brugge

Brugge, known in English as Bruges, is a medieval city in the Flemish region of northwestern Belgium, widely considered one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe. Often called the "Venice of the North" due to its network of picturesque canals, Brugge draws visitors from across the world with its remarkably intact historic center, Gothic architecture, and rich artistic heritage. The historic center of Brugge was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

With a population of around 120,000, Brugge is the capital of the West Flanders province and a city that manages to balance its role as a living community with its status as one of Europe's most visited tourist destinations. The city's golden age came in the 13th to 15th centuries when it was one of the most important commercial centers in northern Europe, a hub of the cloth trade and the international banking system, attracting merchants from across the continent and beyond.

The history of Brugge is inextricably linked to water. Its prosperity was built on access to the sea through the Zwin waterway, allowing it to become a dominant port city. As the Zwin gradually silted up in the late 15th century, commerce shifted to Antwerp and Brugge entered a long period of economic decline. Paradoxically, this decline preserved the medieval fabric of the city, which was never subjected to the large-scale redevelopment that transformed many European cities during the industrial era.

The Markt, the central market square of Brugge, is the beating heart of the city, dominated by the iconic Belfort, a medieval belfry tower rising 83 meters above the square. Climbing its 366 steps rewards visitors with panoramic views over the city's rooftops and canals. The adjacent Burg square features the magnificent Stadhuis, or City Hall, built in the Gothic style in the late 14th century and one of the oldest town halls in the Low Countries.

The Groeningemuseum houses one of the finest collections of Flemish Primitive art in the world, including masterworks by Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, and other great painters who worked in Brugge during its medieval flourishing. The Memling Museum in the Sint-Janshospitaal is another treasure, displaying the works of Hans Memling in the atmospheric setting of the medieval hospital where they were originally commissioned.

Canal boat tours offer visitors a unique perspective on the city from the water level, gliding past medieval warehouses and under stone bridges. The Begijnhof, a tranquil courtyard surrounded by whitewashed houses founded in the 13th century for Beguines, is one of the most serene spots in the city and a UNESCO-recognized site. Brugge is also renowned for its Belgian chocolate, beer, and lace traditions, all of which are celebrated in dedicated museums and specialty shops throughout the city.

The city is well served by rail connections to Brussels, Ghent, and the Belgian coast. Walking and cycling are the best ways to explore Brugge's historic core. With its fairy-tale canals, world-class art, exceptional food and drink culture, and extraordinary architectural heritage, Brugge offers one of the most complete and satisfying urban experiences in all of Europe.
