Brussels
Brussels is the capital and largest city of Belgium, located in the heart of Western Europe. With a population of around 180,000 in the city itself and approximately 1.2 million in the broader Brussels Capital Region, the city punches far above its size on the world stage. Brussels is the de facto capital of the European Union and the administrative home of NATO, making it one of the most politically significant cities in the world. It is also a city of extraordinary art, architecture, food culture, and cosmopolitan energy.
The origins of Brussels date to the 10th century, when a settlement was established on an island in the Senne River. The city grew through the medieval period as an important trading hub in the Low Countries, and during the 15th and 16th centuries it was a center of great prosperity under the Duchy of Brabant and later Burgundian and Habsburg rule. Many of the city's most stunning architectural achievements date from this era of wealth. The Grand Place, the central market square of Brussels, is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful squares in Europe, surrounded by ornate guild houses and the magnificent Town Hall, all illuminated magnificently at night.
Brussels is a treasure trove of art and architecture. The Atomium, a giant structure built for the 1958 World's Fair representing an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times, is one of the most distinctive modern landmarks in Europe. The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium house an outstanding collection including works by Flemish masters such as Bruegel, Rubens, and van Dyck. The Musical Instruments Museum and the Art Nouveau quarter around the Ixelles neighborhood offer further cultural depth. The city is also a UNESCO City of Art and History and is renowned as a global center of Art Nouveau architecture, largely thanks to the work of Victor Horta.
No description of Brussels is complete without mentioning food. The city is celebrated throughout Europe for its chocolate, waffles, frites (French fries), and an extraordinary range of Belgian beers, including Trappist ales, lambics, and gueuzes. The restaurant scene ranges from Michelin-starred establishments to cozy estaminets serving traditional Belgian cuisine. Brussels also hosts some of the continent's finest chocolate shops and pralineries.
As a highly multilingual city with large communities speaking French, Dutch, and English (as well as many other languages), Brussels is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. The presence of EU institutions and international organizations has drawn hundreds of thousands of expatriates, giving the city a uniquely international character.
Brussels is excellently connected by rail, road, and air, with Brussels Airport and a high-speed rail hub linking it to Paris, London, Amsterdam, and Cologne. For any visitor seeking history, politics, art, and unrivaled gastronomy in one compact and navigable city, Brussels is an unmissable destination.
