Calgary
Calgary is a major city located in the province of Alberta in western Canada, situated on the Bow River at the foot of the Canadian Rockies. With a metropolitan population of over 1.5 million, it is the largest city in Alberta and one of the fastest-growing cities in Canada. Calgary is a young and dynamic city known for its energy industry, outdoor culture, world-class winter sports facilities, and as the gateway to some of Canada's most spectacular mountain scenery.
The area around Calgary has been home to indigenous peoples for thousands of years, including the Blackfoot Confederacy, who lived as nomadic hunters on the Great Plains. European settlement began in earnest when the North-West Mounted Police established Fort Calgary in 1875 at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers. The arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1883 triggered rapid growth, and Calgary was incorporated as a city in 1894. The discovery of oil at Turner Valley in 1914, and the much larger Leduc oil field in 1947, transformed Calgary into the energy capital of Canada.
Calgary is perhaps most internationally recognized for hosting the 1988 Winter Olympics, which left a lasting legacy of world-class sports infrastructure. Canada Olympic Park remains an active venue for skiing, snowboarding, bobsled, and luge, and is home to the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. The Calgary Stampede, held every July, is another globally famous event — a ten-day festival celebrating Western heritage with rodeo competitions, chuckwagon racing, live music, and spectacular entertainment that draws over one million visitors each year.
The downtown core, known for its striking skyline of glass towers, is the financial center of the Canadian energy industry. The +15 Walkway System, an extensive network of indoor pedestrian bridges connecting downtown buildings, is one of the longest such systems in the world. The Stephen Avenue Walk, a pedestrianized heritage street lined with restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues, is the social heart of the city center. The Glenbow Museum, dedicated to western Canadian history and culture, is one of the most important cultural institutions in the region.
Calgary's proximity to the Rocky Mountains means that outdoor adventure is always close at hand. Banff National Park, one of the world's most beautiful national parks, is just 90 minutes west of the city. The surrounding area offers world-class skiing, hiking, climbing, cycling, and wildlife watching throughout the year.
The University of Calgary and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) are among the major educational institutions that have helped make the city an increasingly important center for research and innovation. With its entrepreneurial spirit, natural beauty, strong economy, and vibrant cultural scene, Calgary continues to attract people from across Canada and around the world, cementing its place as one of North America's most livable and exciting cities.
