Campina Grande
Campina Grande is the second-largest city in the state of Paraíba, located in northeastern Brazil on the Borborema Plateau at an elevation of approximately 550 meters above sea level. Situated about 120 kilometers west of João Pessoa, the state capital, the city benefits from a relatively cooler and drier climate compared to the coastal lowlands. With a strategic position in the semi-arid interior, Campina Grande has developed into one of the most economically and intellectually dynamic cities in Brazil's northeast, earning it the unofficial title of "the Gateway to the Sertão."
Home to a population of approximately 420,000 people in the urban area, Campina Grande is the second most populous city in Paraíba and among the most significant urban centers in the entire northeastern region of Brazil. The city punches above its weight in terms of economic output, technological innovation, and educational achievement. It is widely recognized as a hub for technology and software development, often compared to Silicon Valley in a northeastern Brazilian context, a reputation built on its strong university ecosystem and an active tech startup community.
The city's founding dates to the seventeenth century when a cattle-ranching outpost was established in the area. It grew into a significant trading point during the cotton boom of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when cotton from the northeastern hinterland was processed and exported through Campina Grande. This economic dynamism attracted merchants and entrepreneurs, giving the city a cosmopolitan character unusual for the interior. After the decline of cotton, the city diversified into manufacturing, services, and eventually technology.
Campina Grande is famous throughout Brazil for hosting one of the largest June festivals in the world. The Festa Junina of Campina Grande, known as the "Maior São João do Mundo" (Biggest Saint John Festival in the World), draws millions of visitors each year to its month-long celebrations featuring forró music, quadrilha dancing, traditional foods, and elaborate decorations. This festival has become a major driver of tourism and cultural pride, attracting visitors from across Brazil and internationally.
The city's cultural and educational infrastructure is impressive for a mid-sized Brazilian city. The Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG) and the State University of Paraíba (UEPB) are nationally recognized institutions with strong programs in engineering, computer science, and agricultural sciences. The Museum of Cotton and City (Museu do Algodão e da Cidade) traces the city's history, while the Açude Velho, a historic reservoir in the city center, serves as a popular leisure area.
The economy of Campina Grande is diversified across industry, services, and the knowledge sector. Manufacturing of footwear, furniture, and food products operates alongside a vibrant technology sector. The Arranjo Produtivo Local de Software (local software production cluster) has generated dozens of companies and attracted national attention as a model for regional technological development.
The city is served by Campina Grande Airport with connections to major Brazilian cities, and lies on highway networks linking Paraíba's interior to the coast and to neighboring northeastern states.
Campina Grande is a city of remarkable energy — where northeastern tradition, academic excellence, and technological ambition converge to create one of Brazil's most distinctive and forward-looking urban experiences.
