Cần Thơ is the largest city in the Mekong Delta region of southern Vietnam and one of the country's five centrally administered municipalities, giving it a status equivalent to a province. Located approximately 170 kilometers southwest of Ho Chi Minh City, the city sits at the heart of a vast network of rivers, canals, and waterways that define the geography and character of the Mekong Delta. Culturally, Cần Thơ embodies the open, hospitable spirit of southern Vietnam. The city's cuisine is celebrated — dishes like hủ tiếu (rice noodle soup), bánh xèo (sizzling crepes), and fresh tropical fruits are local staples. Traditional folk music forms such as đờn ca tài tử, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, are performed regularly and remain a cherished part of social gatherings. Festivals tied to both the Vietnamese and Khmer calendars enrich the cultural life of the city throughout the year.

Transportation in Cần Thơ is anchored by Cần Thơ International Airport, which connects the city to Hanoi, Da Nang, and several international destinations. The Cần Thơ Bridge, one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in Southeast Asia at the time of its construction, spans the Hậu River and has dramatically improved road connectivity to Ho Chi Minh City and the wider delta. Boats and ferries remain essential for travel within and around the city's extensive waterway network.

Cần Thơ is an important center of education in southern Vietnam. Cần Thơ University, founded in 1966, is one of the country's leading public universities and is particularly renowned for its agricultural sciences, engineering, and environmental research programs — fields directly relevant to the challenges and opportunities of the Mekong Delta. Several other colleges and technical institutes serve the city's growing student population.

The economy of Cần Thơ is rooted in agriculture and agro-processing — the delta produces enormous quantities of rice, fish, shrimp, and tropical fruits for both domestic consumption and export.
