Canoas
Canoas is a city in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil, lying immediately north of the state capital Porto Alegre and forming a core part of its metropolitan area. It occupies flat, low-lying ground close to the delta where the Jacuí and Sinos rivers empty into the Guaíba, a landscape of wetlands, canals and floodplain that has shaped both its growth and its vulnerabilities.
With a population of about three hundred and forty thousand, Canoas is one of the largest cities in the state and among its most economically productive. The Alberto Pasqualini refinery, the only oil refinery in Rio Grande do Sul, stands within the municipality, alongside petrochemical plants, metalworking industries and extensive logistics operations that take advantage of the highways converging here.
The area developed late. It began as a stopping point on the cattle route north from Porto Alegre, and the arrival of the railway in the 1870s created a settlement around the station. German and Italian immigrant families farmed the surrounding land, and the district remained a rural extension of the capital until the twentieth century. Canoas became an independent municipality in 1939, and industrial growth after the Second World War, together with the opening of the refinery in 1968, turned it rapidly into a working city.
Canoas is not a tourist town in the conventional sense, but it has its landmarks. The Canoas Air Base, home to Brazilian Air Force fighter squadrons, is a familiar presence and its aviation displays draw crowds. Parque Getúlio Vargas, known locally as Parcão, is the main green space, and the Casa de Cultura and the municipal theatre host exhibitions and concerts. The Museu Hugo Simões Lagranha records local history, and the riverside districts offer views across the water towards the capital.
Cultural life is thoroughly gaúcho. Traditionalist centres teach the dances, dress and horsemanship of the southern plains, chimarrão is shared in every park, and the churrasco barbecue is a weekend institution. Football is followed passionately, with loyalties divided between the great Porto Alegre clubs, and the city has its own long-established teams. Neighbourhood festivals, Carnival groups and a strong evangelical and Catholic parish life fill the calendar.
Transport is a defining feature. The BR-116 highway, one of the busiest in Brazil, runs through the city, as do the BR-386 and other major routes, and the Trensurb urban railway connects Canoas directly to central Porto Alegre and to Salgado Filho International Airport in a few minutes. This accessibility explains much of its industrial success.
Education is unusually well developed for a city of this size, with the Lutheran University of Brazil and Unilasalle both based here, drawing students from across the metropolitan region and supporting medical, engineering and veterinary training.
Canoas is significant as an industrial and educational anchor of southern Brazil. The catastrophic floods of 2024, which submerged large districts, showed how exposed the low-lying city is, and the reconstruction effort since then has become a central part of its recent story.
