Capao Redondo

Capao Redondo is a district in the far southern zone of Sao Paulo, the largest city in Brazil and in the southern hemisphere. It lies across steep hills and narrow valleys about fifteen kilometres from the historic centre, close to the Guarapiranga reservoir that supplies much of the city with drinking water. The name comes from a rounded patch of woodland that once stood on the old farmland here, long since replaced by a dense sea of houses stretching to the horizon.

With more than two hundred and fifty thousand residents, the district is one of the most populous in the city and among the most densely settled. Its significance lies in the story it tells about modern Sao Paulo, because it grew almost entirely through the arrival of families from the north east of Brazil and from the rural interior who came looking for work in the factories of the metropolis during the second half of the twentieth century.

Until the 1950s this was rural land of smallholdings and clay pits. Migration and rapid, largely unplanned building then filled the hills with self constructed houses, often without paved roads, drainage or public services at first. The 1990s were difficult years, when the district became known nationally for high levels of violence, but conditions have changed considerably since then. Homicide rates fell dramatically, public investment brought schools, health centres, cultural facilities and better transport, and residents built strong community organisations of their own.

Visitors will not find monuments in the conventional sense. What draws attention instead is the cultural energy of the place. Capao Redondo is one of the birthplaces of Brazilian hip hop, home to rappers, writers and poets whose work describes life on the periphery and reaches audiences across the country. Literary evenings held in local bars, community libraries, walls covered in ambitious graffiti and independent publishers have given the district a national reputation for grassroots culture, and its writers are studied in schools and universities.

Everyday life revolves around football pitches levelled into hilltops, evangelical and Catholic churches, weekly street markets and the small commerce of the main avenues. Large public education centres known as CEUs provide swimming pools, theatres and libraries for young people, while parks near the reservoir offer green space, cycling and wide views across the water. Barbecue, feijoada and northeastern dishes such as baiao de dois reflect the origins of many families.

The most important improvement of recent decades has been the arrival of the metro. Line 5 terminates at Capao Redondo station and links the district directly with the centre and the rest of the network, cutting journey times dramatically. Bus corridors towards the Santo Amaro terminal complete the connections, and technical schools and college campuses have opened nearby.

Capao Redondo matters because it represents the resilience and creativity of the urban periphery, a place that has turned hardship into one of the most influential cultural movements in contemporary Brazil.
