Current Time in Carabanchel, Spain

Carabanchel is a district of Madrid, the capital of Spain, occupying a broad area of the south-west of the city on the far side of the Manzanares River from the historic centre. It rises over gentle hills once covered by wheat fields and country estates, and although it is now entirely urban, its long avenues, large parks and low skyline give it a character quite distinct from the dense old quarters across the water.

With around two hundred and sixty thousand inhabitants, Carabanchel is one of the most populous districts in Madrid and would rank among the larger cities of Spain if it stood alone. It is a working-class and strongly multicultural area, home to communities from Latin America, Morocco, Romania, China and West Africa, and this diversity is visible in its shops, restaurants and markets. The local economy rests on retail, construction, transport, health care and services, and many residents commute to work elsewhere in the metropolitan region, while a growing number of artists and small studios have been drawn by lower rents into what is now sometimes called the creative district of the city.

Until the middle of the twentieth century Carabanchel consisted of two separate municipalities, Carabanchel Alto and Carabanchel Bajo, villages known for their fresh air and country houses where aristocratic and wealthy Madrid families spent the summer. Goya painted the meadow of San Isidro here, capturing the pilgrimage that still fills the park each May. The two towns were absorbed into Madrid in 1948, and the following decades brought enormous immigration from rural Spain and the rapid construction of housing estates. The district was also the site of the Carabanchel prison, built by prisoners after the Civil War and long a symbol of political repression, which was finally demolished in 2008.

The meadow and hermitage of San Isidro remain the emotional centre of the district, the place where Madrid celebrates its patron saint with picnics, chotis dancing and traditional dress, and the neighbouring San Isidro cemetery contains remarkable funerary architecture. The Quinta de Vista Alegre, a former royal estate with palaces, gardens and follies, has been progressively restored and opened to the public, and the Vistalegre arena, once a bullring, now hosts concerts, sport and political events. Parque de las Cruces, Parque Emperatriz Maria de Austria and the linear parks along the river provide extensive green space, and the district has a lively calendar of neighbourhood fiestas.

Cultural life is grounded in community centres, libraries and municipal theatres, and in recent years in open studio events that have attracted attention across the city. Schools, vocational colleges and the large Gomez Ulla hospital serve the population, while the universities of Madrid are within easy reach. Three metro lines, including lines 5, 6 and 11, along with commuter rail and a dense bus network, connect Carabanchel to the centre in a few minutes.

Carabanchel is important as one of the largest, most diverse and most rapidly changing districts of the Spanish capital.
