Cartagena

Cartagena de Indias, commonly known simply as Cartagena, is a major port city on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, located on a bay sheltered by a chain of islands off the northern coast of South America. With a population of approximately 1.1 million, Cartagena is the capital of the Bolívar Department and one of Colombia's most important cities economically and culturally. The city is internationally renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved colonial walled city, its beautiful Caribbean beaches, its vibrant culture, and as the setting of Gabriel García Márquez's literary imagination.

Cartagena was founded by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Heredia in 1533 and rapidly grew into one of the most important ports in the Spanish colonial empire. Its strategic position on the Caribbean made it the primary port through which the riches of New Granada (present-day Colombia) — including gold, emeralds, and other valuables — were shipped to Spain. This wealth also made Cartagena a prime target for pirates and privateers, most famously the English privateer Francis Drake, who sacked the city in 1586. To protect against such attacks, the Spanish constructed an enormous and sophisticated system of fortifications, including the massive walls of the Old City and the imposing Castillo San Felipe de Barajas.

The Historic Centre of Cartagena, enclosed within its 11 kilometers of defensive walls, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved colonial cities in the Americas. The neighborhoods of San Diego, Getsemaní, and the commercial district within the walls are filled with colorful colonial mansions with bougainvillea-draped balconies, baroque churches, shaded plazas, and cobblestone streets that create an atmosphere of timeless beauty. The Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, a massive Spanish fortification begun in 1536 and expanded into the most complex and sophisticated military fortification ever built by Spain in the New World, offers extraordinary views over the city and bay.

Cartagena is intimately associated with Gabriel García Márquez, the Nobel Prize-winning Colombian author who lived much of his life here and set many scenes of his novels, including Love in the Time of Cholera, in the city. The García Márquez Cultural Center and the Claustro de La Merced celebrate the city's literary heritage. The Old City's streets, squares, and buildings feel like pages from his magical realist novels, where the extraordinary and the mundane coexist in perfect tropical heat.

The beaches of Cartagena, particularly at the Bocagrande peninsula and on the nearby Rosario and San Bernardo islands, are among the Caribbean's most beautiful. The bay and offshore coral islands offer excellent snorkeling, diving, and sailing. The city's cuisine combines coastal Colombian traditions with Caribbean influences, featuring dishes built around fresh seafood, coconut rice, and plantains.

Rafael Núñez International Airport connects Cartagena to major Colombian cities and international destinations. With its magnificent colonial architecture, extraordinary Caribbean setting, literary legacy, world-class beaches, and vibrant cultural life, Cartagena is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and captivating cities in South America and the wider Caribbean world.
