Caserta

Caserta is a city in the Campania region of southern Italy, situated in the fertile Terra di Lavoro plain approximately 35 kilometres north of Naples, at the foot of the Campanian foothills. With a population of around 76,000 residents, it is the capital of the Province of Caserta and one of the most important administrative and commercial centres in the Campania region. Caserta is known above all as the site of the Royal Palace of Caserta (Reggia di Caserta), one of the largest royal residences in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has established the city as a significant destination for cultural tourism in southern Italy.

The modern city of Caserta was largely developed in the eighteenth century to support the construction and operation of the Royal Palace, which was commissioned by Charles III of Bourbon, King of Naples and Sicily, as part of his ambitious programme to transform the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies into a major European power. Before this, the area was dominated by the old town of Casertavecchia, a medieval settlement perched on a hill above the plain that remains beautifully preserved and is an important attraction in its own right. The choice of the Caserta site for the new palace was motivated by strategic considerations — its inland position offered protection from naval bombardment, unlike the coastal capital Naples.

The Royal Palace of Caserta is the centrepiece of any visit to the city. Designed by the architect Luigi Vanvitelli and begun in 1752, the palace is a masterpiece of late Baroque architecture on a breathtaking scale, with 1,200 rooms, 34 staircases, and a facade more than 250 metres in length. The grand interior apartments are decorated with extraordinary frescoes, tapestries, sculptures, and furnishings reflecting the tastes and ambitions of the Bourbon court. The palace's English and Italian gardens extend for more than three kilometres behind the building, culminating in a spectacular cascade and waterfall fed by a purpose-built aqueduct — the Carolino Aqueduct, also a UNESCO-listed monument. The gardens were used as a filming location in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, adding an element of popular cultural recognition to their historic grandeur.

Casertavecchia, the medieval predecessor town on the hill above the modern city, preserves a remarkable twelfth-century Norman cathedral, a thirteenth-century tower, and a network of medieval streets largely unchanged since the Angevin period. The hilltop setting offers panoramic views across the plain to Naples and the sea, making it a rewarding excursion from the city below. The Belvedere of San Leucio, a Bourbon-era silk manufacturing complex and planned settlement on a hill northwest of the palace, is also included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing.

Caserta's economy is driven by public administration, defence — the city hosts important Italian Air Force installations — commerce, and services. The Second University of Naples (now known as the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli) has significant facilities in Caserta, contributing to the city's educational profile and supporting a sizeable student population. The surrounding provincial territory is known for high-quality agricultural products including the prized buffalo mozzarella (Mozzarella di Bufala Campana), a Protected Designation of Origin product with international renown.

Rail connections are excellent, with Caserta served by Intercity and regional trains linking it to Naples in under 40 minutes and to Rome in approximately 90 minutes. The A1 and A30 motorways provide road access to the major cities of southern Italy. The city's position between Naples and Rome on the main Campania rail corridor makes it highly accessible for travellers on both domestic and international itineraries.

Caserta is a city defined by royal ambition and Baroque grandeur, offering visitors one of Europe's most impressive palace and garden complexes alongside a genuine medieval heritage and the living culture of a contemporary southern Italian provincial capital — a destination that consistently surprises with the scale and quality of what it has to offer.
