Cebu City

Cebu City is the regional center and largest city of Central Visayas, located on the eastern coast of Cebu Island in the Visayas region of the central Philippines. With a population of approximately 950,000 in the city proper and over 2.9 million in the Metro Cebu area, it is the second-most important city in the Philippines after Manila, and serves as the primary hub for commerce, education, tourism, and culture in the central and southern Philippines. Cebu City is often called the Queen City of the South.

Cebu holds a singular place in Philippine history as the site of the first Spanish settlement in the country. When Ferdinand Magellan arrived in 1521, he established contact with the local chieftain Rajah Humabon and introduced Christianity to the Philippines, leaving behind the Santo Niño statue — a gift to Rajah Humabon's wife — which is now enshrined in the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, the oldest church in the Philippines. Magellan's Cross, a large cross planted by Magellan as a symbol of the conversion of the local population to Christianity, is preserved in a chapel adjacent to the basilica. These sites are among the most important historical and religious landmarks in the Philippines.

Fort San Pedro, the smallest fort in the Philippines and the oldest triangular bastion fort in the country, was built by the Spanish in 1565 and today serves as a museum and heritage park. The Heritage of Cebu Monument, a large outdoor sculpture depicting key events in Cebu's history, and the Magellan's Cross are highlights of the historical Parian district. The Cebu Provincial Capitol Building, surrounded by beautiful gardens, is one of the most elegant government buildings in the region.

Cebu City is an important center of higher education in the Philippines, home to the University of San Carlos, Cebu Institute of Technology University, and the University of the Philippines Cebu, among many others. The city's large student population contributes to a lively, youthful energy and a vibrant cafe, restaurant, and entertainment scene centered on areas like IT Park, Ayala Center, and SM City Cebu.

The Sinulog Festival, held every third Sunday of January in honor of the Santo Niño, is one of the Philippines' grandest and most colorful festivals, drawing millions of participants and spectators to the city for a week of street dancing, parades, and religious celebrations. The festival's dancing and drumming have become symbols of Cebuano identity throughout the world.

Cebu is served by Mactan-Cebu International Airport, one of the Philippines' busiest airports with extensive domestic and international connections. The city's combination of historical significance, religious heritage, educational excellence, economic dynamism, and vibrant cultural life makes it the indispensable heart of the central Philippines.
