Cheonan is a major city in South Chungcheong Province, South Korea, situated approximately 90 kilometers south of Seoul. With a population of approximately 660,000, Cheonan is the most populous city in South Chungcheong Province and one of the fastest-growing cities in South Korea. Its position midway between Seoul and the major southern cities of Daejeon, Daegu, and Busan, combined with excellent transportation links, has made Cheonan a strategically important logistical and industrial hub.

Cheonan has a history rooted in the traditional agricultural communities of the Korean interior. During the Japanese colonial period (1910–1945), the city developed as a railway junction on the Gyeongbu Line connecting Seoul to Busan. This railway connection established Cheonan's role as a transit and commercial hub that continued to be important after Korean independence. The city's growth accelerated dramatically in the 1980s and 1990s as industrial development spread southward from Seoul and Cheonan became a favored location for factories and logistics facilities.

One of Korea's most important historical sites is located in Cheonan — the Independence Hall of Korea (Dokripginyeomgwan), the largest museum in South Korea, dedicated to documenting Korea's history of Japanese colonial rule and the struggle for independence. The hall's impressive campus, covering nearly 400 hectares, includes seven exhibition halls, memorials, and landscape gardens. It is one of the most visited cultural sites in South Korea and a deeply important site of national memory and identity for Koreans.

Cheonan is a significant center of Korea's manufacturing economy, particularly in the electronics and semiconductor sectors. Samsung SDI — a major subsidiary of Samsung producing batteries and electronic materials — has a major manufacturing facility in Cheonan. Automotive components, machinery, and chemical manufacturing are also important sectors. Several large industrial parks have been developed to accommodate manufacturing investment flowing out of the Seoul metropolitan area.

The city has excellent transportation infrastructure, with both the Korea Train Express (KTX) and conventional rail lines connecting it to Seoul in under an hour and to other Korean cities. The KTX connection has made Cheonan a practical base for commuters working in Seoul while living in a less congested environment. Dangejin University and Soonchunhyang University are among the educational institutions that serve the city.

Cheonan's combination of historical significance as the home of Korea's Independence Hall, its growing industrial base, excellent transportation connectivity, and status as one of Korea's fastest-growing regional cities make it a dynamic and important center in the heart of the Korean Peninsula.
