Cherepovets
Cherepovets stands in the north-west of European Russia, in Vologda Oblast, on the banks of the Sheksna River close to the point where it widens into the vast Rybinsk Reservoir. The surrounding country is a low, lake-strewn landscape of pine and birch forest typical of the Russian North. Winters are long and snowy, summers short and bright, and the water, both river and reservoir, is never far from view.
With a population of around three hundred thousand, Cherepovets is the largest city in its region, bigger than the administrative capital Vologda itself. Its significance is industrial. The Severstal works here is one of the biggest integrated steel plants in Russia and among the largest in the world, and a major chemical complex producing nitrogen and phosphate fertilisers operates alongside it. Together they make the city one of the country's essential manufacturing centres.
The settlement traces its origins to the Resurrection Monastery, founded in the fourteenth century by two monks on the wooded riverbank. A village of boatmen and traders grew up around it, and Catherine the Great granted town status in 1777. Its position on the water route linking the Volga with the Baltic gave it modest prosperity in the nineteenth century, when local merchants and the reforming mayor Ivan Milyutin built schools, a technical college and a river fleet. The transformation came after the Second World War, when the Soviet government chose the site for a huge metallurgical plant, drawing on ore from the Kola Peninsula and coal from Vorkuta. Construction began in 1949, the first steel was poured in 1955, and the town multiplied in size within a generation.
Cherepovets is proud of the Vereshchagin family. The painter Vasily Vereshchagin, whose unsparing battle scenes made him one of the most famous Russian artists of the nineteenth century, was born here in 1842, and the wooden family house is now a museum. His brother Nikolai created Vologda butter, still a protected regional product. The city museum association also runs a museum of metallurgy, a children's museum and an art gallery, and the restored Resurrection Cathedral remains the oldest building in town.
Everyday life is comfortable by regional standards, supported by the wealth of its industry, with well-kept embankments, parks and sports facilities. Ice hockey inspires real passion, and the local club plays in the national league. The Oktyabrsky Bridge, opened in 1979 as the first cable-stayed bridge in the Soviet Union, has become the city's emblem and offers wide views over the water.
Railways connect Cherepovets to Saint Petersburg, Vologda and Moscow, the Volga-Baltic waterway carries cargo vessels and cruise ships past the city, and an airport provides regional flights. Cherepovets State University trains engineers, teachers and economists for the region.
Cherepovets is a purposeful northern city where heavy industry, river landscapes and a genuine artistic heritage sit side by side.
