Cherkasy

Cherkasy stands in central Ukraine on the right bank of the Dnieper, where the river has been widened into the vast Kremenchuk Reservoir, giving the city a waterfront that looks more like a lake than a river. Wooded hills and pine forests rise behind the town, and the surrounding countryside is a rolling expanse of black earth farmland. The city is often described as lying in the geographic heart of Ukraine, and its region carries deep significance in the national story.

About two hundred and seventy thousand people live here. Cherkasy has a strong industrial base, with one of the largest chemical and fertiliser plants in the country, machine building, food processing, textiles, furniture and building materials. Agriculture in the surrounding region produces grain, sugar beet, sunflower and fruit on an enormous scale, and the river supports shipping and fisheries. Information technology and services have grown steadily in recent years.

The town is first mentioned in written sources in 1286, and it developed as a frontier fortress of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and later of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, guarding the route down the Dnieper against Tatar raids. It became one of the cradles of the Ukrainian Cossacks, and the region around it was the heartland of the great uprising led by Bohdan Khmelnytskyi in 1648, whose capital lay at nearby Chyhyryn. Later centuries brought Russian imperial rule, industrial growth after the railway, and severe suffering during the famine of the 1930s and the Second World War, when the city was largely destroyed. It was rebuilt afterwards on a spacious plan of wide boulevards and parks.

The long embankment beside the reservoir, with beaches, promenades and a pine park, is the favourite gathering place. The Hill of Glory, crowned by a memorial and an eternal flame, gives sweeping views over the water, and the Kobzar bridge, one of the longest crossings of the Dnieper, stretches for well over a kilometre. Museums of local history and Cossack heritage, a regional theatre and the wooden and stone churches of the old quarters are worth visiting. The greatest attractions, however, lie in the surrounding region. Kaniv holds the grave of Taras Shevchenko, the poet who shaped modern Ukrainian identity, on a hill above the river, and it draws pilgrims from across the country. Chyhyryn preserves the reconstructed Cossack fortress of Khmelnytskyi, and Uman is home to Sofiyivka Park, a magnificent landscape garden of grottoes, waterfalls and lakes, as well as a destination for Hasidic pilgrimage each autumn.

Cultural life reflects this heritage, with Cossack festivals, embroidery, folk choirs and a strong literary tradition. Local cuisine features borscht, varenyky, salo, buckwheat dishes and honey from the region's abundant apiaries.

Rail and bus services connect Cherkasy with Kyiv, about two hours away, and with Odesa and Dnipro, and highways cross the region. Bohdan Khmelnytskyi National University and several technical institutes serve a substantial student population.

Cherkasy is important as an industrial and cultural centre in the historic heartland of Cossack Ukraine.
