Chernihiv
Chernihiv stands in the north of Ukraine on the right bank of the Desna River, about a hundred and forty kilometres northeast of Kyiv and close to the borders with Belarus and Russia. The setting is one of wooded lowland, meadows and river bends on the edge of the Polissya region, and the climate is temperate continental, with snowy winters, warm summers and green, well watered surroundings.
The city had a population of around two hundred and eighty thousand before 2022 and is the administrative centre of Chernihiv Oblast. Its economy has traditionally rested on textiles, food processing, brewing, musical instruments and machine building, while the surrounding region is agricultural.
Chernihiv is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine, first mentioned in a treaty of 907, and in the eleventh and twelfth centuries it was the capital of a powerful principality that rivalled Kyiv itself. That golden age left an architectural heritage of international importance, for Chernihiv preserves more pre Mongol churches than almost anywhere in Eastern Europe. The Cathedral of the Transfiguration, begun around 1030, is among the oldest surviving churches in the lands of Kyivan Rus. The Cathedral of Saints Borys and Hlib, the Assumption Cathedral of the Yeletsky Monastery, the Illinska Church and the Pyatnytska Church, a masterpiece of twelfth century design restored after the Second World War, all stand within a short walk of one another.
Beneath the Boldyni Hills run the Anthony Caves, a monastic complex of underground passages and chapels founded in the eleventh century, and nearby are burial mounds from the pre Christian period. The Val, the old fortress hill above the Desna, is now a park lined with cannons from the Cossack era, when Chernihiv was the seat of a regiment of the Hetmanate and gained a fine collection of Ukrainian baroque buildings, including the collegium with its tiered bell tower.
The city has suffered greatly in recent history. In the first weeks of the full scale Russian invasion in 2022 it was encircled and heavily shelled for over a month, with severe damage to housing, the regional library, the drama theatre and the hospital, and a significant loss of civilian life before the siege was lifted in early April. Repair and restoration work has continued since, and the historic churches survived, though several were damaged.
Cultural life centres on the Shevchenko Drama Theatre, the regional art museum, the historical museum named after Vasyl Tarnovsky with its Cossack collections, and the parks along the Desna, where the city beach and boating are popular in summer. Nearby are the palace and park at Kachanivka, the artists' colony town of Sedniv and the historic town of Novhorod Siverskyi.
Transport is by road and rail to Kyiv, with a bus network within the city, and the capital's airports serve international travel.
Chernihiv Polytechnic National University and the National University Chernihiv Collegium provide higher education.
Chernihiv is important as a living monument of medieval Rus architecture and as a resilient regional capital in northern Ukraine.
